Hello everyone,

I am currently planning my new kitchen and want to use an Ikea Metod kitchen cabinet system. The problem is that I have very limited space available but still need as much storage as possible. My question is: How can Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets be arranged efficiently in a small area to maximize storage without compromising functionality or freedom of movement? I am thinking about smart planning of base cabinets, pull-outs, use of corners, and possibly a clever combination of wall and base cabinets.

Does anyone have experience or good tips on how to get the most volume and storage from Metod modules in a small space? I look forward to your suggestions!

I find the whole idea of trying to fit all storage needs into a very small space fundamentally problematic. If you try to pack in too much, you lose functionality – that’s pretty obvious. Instead of aiming for maximum volume, a minimalistic approach might be better: less is more!

But honestly, if you really want a lot of storage, I would definitely rely entirely on pull-out drawers, keep them very well organized, and make sure to include corner solutions with carousels or drawer organizers shaped to fit angled spaces. Wall-mounted cabinets that reach up to the ceiling are an absolute must. And if space gets tight, it’s better to use built-in ovens and refrigerators installed higher up, which frees up lower space for drawers.

Storage in a tight space is always a compromise – and while Ikea Metod is quite flexible, the modular system also has its limits.

Correct. When planning Metod kitchen units in small spaces, a structured approach to cabinet types is essential:

- Base cabinets with full-extension drawers for cutlery and larger pots
- Corner cabinets with carousel or drawer solutions for optimal use of space
- Wall cabinets extending up to the ceiling are advisable for infrequently used items
- Flexible interior organization with baskets and divider systems

Freedom of movement is ensured by maintaining minimum clearances (at least 120 cm (47 inches) of working space in front of the kitchen units).

Accurate planning with design software is important since Metod offers many modules and heights. This way, storage capacity is systematically increased within a limited area.

I would approach the question from a different angle: Often the issue is not just the layout of the Ikea Metod modules, but an insufficient analysis of how much storage is actually needed.

A precise assessment of requirements is essential: What is used and how often? For the kitchen, it makes sense to store frequently used items in easily accessible drawers, and rarely used items in high wall cabinets.

The second point is ergonomics. As a general rule, you need at least 120 cm (47 inches) of clearance in front of the kitchen units to allow freedom of movement – this is non-negotiable.

Thirdly, it is crucial to systematically combine the available modules:
- Small deep drawers for small items
- Large drawers for pots and pans
- Carousel or LeMans corner cabinets for hard-to-reach corners

Ultimately, I would advise against simply aiming for maximum storage space. Instead, focus on sensible storage use that avoids self-created obstacles through planning mistakes.

Absolutely! I recently planned my smaller Metod kitchen unit using the Ikea kitchen planner app – it really helped me make the most of the available space while still allowing enough room to move around.

My tips:
- Use the full height, especially in small kitchens “stacking up” is ideal
- Don’t forget corner solutions; a carousel cabinet is invaluable for making corners usable
- Front drawers are better than open shelves since you can organize storage much more efficiently

And don’t hesitate to live with the plan for a few days – then adjust if needed. A functional kitchen is more than just having plenty of storage! 😉

Exactly! You can also want too much.

And of course, Metod provides a solid foundation, but only those who plan smartly can really maximize storage in a very limited space. My suggestion: think modular and prioritize functions instead of filling every corner.

What’s especially important:
- Systematically place frequently used items within easy reach
- Clearly separate work zones from storage areas
- No compromises on clearance and movement space

For me, the clever drawers and interior fittings are the heart of maximizing space.

By the way, has anyone had experience with the Metod tall cabinets and how efficiently they use storage space? I’m curious!
