Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I purchased several Brimnes furniture pieces from Ikea and now want to clean them gently and effectively without damaging the surface or the material properties. I am especially interested in whether there is an official cleaning guide or at least one recommended by other users for Ikea Brimnes furniture. What cleaning agents are best suited? How often should the furniture be cleaned to avoid damage or discoloration? I want to make sure to keep the furniture looking good for a long time without using aggressive or inappropriate cleaners.

I look forward to your experiences and tips!

Hello Pra56,

As far as I know, there is no official cleaning guide from Ikea specifically for the Brimnes series. However, you can follow Ikea’s general care recommendations for painted and coated furniture. These include:

- Cleaning with a mild detergent, such as a gentle dish soap diluted in water
- Avoiding abrasive or harsh cleaners that could damage the surface
- Dabbing with a soft cloth, avoiding rough sponges
- Drying with a lint-free cloth to prevent water spots

Try to remove stains as soon as possible to prevent them from setting. For stubborn stains, a special furniture cleaner without solvents may help. When cleaning Brimnes, pay particular attention to the foil or lacquer surface to avoid damage.

Hello,

Here is a brief guide on the best way to clean Brimnes furniture:

1. Preparation: Remove dust using a soft microfiber cloth or a duster.

2. Cleaning solution: Prepare lukewarm water with a few drops of mild dish soap, for example a neutral detergent.

3. Cleaning: Lightly dampen the cloth – it should not be dripping wet. Gently wipe the surfaces.

4. Drying: Immediately dry the furniture with a dry microfiber cloth, as moisture can damage the laminate surface.

5. Stain treatment: For stubborn stains, gently clean with a paste made of baking soda and water, then wipe thoroughly.

Common mistakes include using too much water or harsh cleaners. The latter can damage the protective layer and make the surface dull or brittle.

Tip: Regular cleaning is more effective than intensive cleaning only when heavily soiled.

In addition to the previous information:

Brimnes furniture is often made of lacquered particleboard with a foil coating. This material is sensitive to solvents, alcohols, and abrasive cleaners.

It is therefore recommended to use only mild, pH-neutral cleaners and to avoid vigorous scrubbing.

Standing water on the surfaces should also be avoided, as this can cause the particleboard to swell and the foil to peel off.

Therefore, please follow these guidelines:
- No abrasive sponges
- No ammonia-based cleaners
- No solvents
- Clean using a top-to-bottom wiping technique

By following these measures, you can preserve the appearance and durability of the furniture over the long term.

For the Brimnes furniture, I simply use warm water with a little dish soap. Then wipe it down with a damp cloth and polish it afterward with a dry cloth. This works well and protects the surfaces.

Thanks for the advice, that sounds very reasonable. I would also like to know if there are any differences in cleaning requirements between the various Brimnes furniture types. For example, comparing the bed frame with the cabinets or dressers. Does anyone know if different surfaces or materials are used that require different care?
