RaboparHello everyone, I am planning to retrofit my IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets with soft-close drawer systems. I currently have the standard version with regular slides and would like to know which compatible soft-close systems are available that can be easily integrated without having to remove the entire drawer or buy new cabinets. It is also important for me to learn how to properly adjust the soft-close function so that the drawers close smoothly and quietly, without closing too quickly or roughly. Are there differences in installation depending on the various Metod drawer widths or drawer depths? And what tips are there to ensure a durable and quiet soft-close retrofit? I hope someone here in the forum has experience or recommendations – thanks in advance!
Hello Rabopar,
First of all, a tip: IKEA offers suitable soft-close slides for Metod, which are usually compatible with the existing runners. Especially if you have the original Metod drawers, the replacement is relatively straightforward.
Usually, the soft-close components are mounted as separate dampers, either directly on the drawer or on the side rails. It is important that the runners are precisely aligned, otherwise the damping function can be impaired.
For adjustment: There are often screws or regulators on the dampers that influence the closing speed and force. If the damper feels too strong or too weak, it can be adjusted accordingly. It is recommended to start with small adjustment steps and test the drawer multiple times.
Regarding your questions about width and depth: Larger or deeper drawers often require stronger or bigger dampers because the closing force is higher. The mounting points of the soft-close elements may vary depending on the width.
In summary:
- Original IKEA soft-close slides are ideal for compatibility
- Runners should be carefully aligned
- Dampers have adjustment options for closing
- Width and depth affect the choice of dampers
If you provide more precise drawer measurements, I can gladly tell you exactly which components will fit best.

Hello Rabopar,
I would like to provide a more detailed response, as retrofitting soft-close drawers in Metod systems involves some tricky details that should not be underestimated.
First, you should know exactly which type of drawer you have (e.g., full extension, inner drawer, toe-kick drawer) and the exact width/depth of the cabinet. IKEA uses many standardized dimensions for Metod, but the installation options can vary significantly.
The soft-close function in Metod is usually achieved using dampers attached to the sliding rails. These dampers slow down the drawer closing and ensure a gentle pull-in. If you want to upgrade the existing standard slides to soft-close, there are the following options:
- Replacing the complete sliding rails with soft-close versions from IKEA
- Attaching retrofit dampers to the existing rails, if compatible
If you choose to replace the rails, you will usually get everything in a set with the appropriate screws and instructions. Make sure the new rails exactly match the width of your drawer! Large differences can lead to play or poor function.
The adjustment of the soft-close dampers is usually done via screws that you can turn easily. They affect the closing speed and spring force. It is important to be very careful here to find the perfect setting because too tight adjustments can damage the mechanism, while too loose settings can result in a hard slam at the end.
A small note: If the drawers are already very old or worn out, retrofitting can be problematic, as warped drawers affect the damping. So please check the condition of the drawers before the modification.
Finally, a few technical details:
- The dampers mostly work with hydraulic or mechanical resistance
- The door or drawer front should ideally be aligned at the correct angle so that the soft-close function can engage properly
- For very wide drawers, reinforced sliding rails are sometimes recommended
If you want, I can also provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to carry out the retrofit practically.

My drawers are actually the common 60cm (24 inches) wide and 60cm (24 inches) deep Metod drawers, not full-extension but the regular metal slides, if I am correctly informed.

So be sure to check the condition of the drawers before remodeling. That definitely applies to my drawers; they are 8 years old and are a bit stiff in some areas. In this case, would it be better to replace the slides entirely? What do you think makes more sense, retrofitting or replacing? The manuals often only explain how to install the soft-close components but don’t cover how to properly adjust the dampers afterwards without either locking everything up or making it too loose.
Maybe someone can give me tips on the best way to adjust the drawers gently and evenly?

Should I completely replace the drawer slides in this case? What do you think makes more sense, retrofitting or replacing?Hello Rabopar,
Technically, completely replacing the drawer slides is the better option for old drawers that have become difficult to operate. This way, you benefit from new running mechanisms that optimally support the soft-close damping. Retrofitting with separate dampers has the drawback that the old mechanism can interfere with the smooth closing motion.
- Tip: With Metod, you can find original soft-close drawer slides that are exactly matched to the width of your drawer (in your case 60cm (24 inches)).
- Advantage: No additional adjustments needed since everything is designed for the system.
- Closing force adjustment: Most IKEA soft-close systems offer limited adjustment options, which are usually optimized during drawer installation (e.g., spacing, precise installation height).
Another point: Keep in mind that with older drawers, the stability of the carcass is also important. Wobbling or play can affect the closing function.
My conclusion: For a durable and optimal result, invest in new soft-close drawer slides and then reinstall the drawer fronts. Although this involves some effort, it provides a significantly better benefit than simply retrofitting dampers on old slides.
If you want, I can provide a brief checklist for replacing the drawer slides.

To conclude, here are a few technical details:
- The dampers usually operate with hydraulic or mechanical resistance
- The door or drawer front should be positioned at the correct angle to allow the soft-close function to work properly
- For very wide drawers, reinforced runners are sometimes recommendedIn addition: The adjustability of the soft-close drawers in IKEA Metod is actually limited. When you change the runners, you get a system that is precisely matched to the drawer. The “fine tuning” for smooth closing mainly depends on the accuracy of the installation rather than a separate adjustment screw.
If you retrofit dampers only on older drawers, keep in mind that they often don’t work optimally if the runners themselves already have stiffness or are misaligned. Therefore, before retrofitting, you should check the following:
- Drawer movement: smooth and even without noticeable resistance
- Runners: no deformation, rust, or loose screws
- Drawer front: firmly mounted without play
As long as the kitchen cabinet is in good condition, installing original soft-close runners offers the best compromise between effort and result. If not, it’s better to consider new cabinets or at least thorough repairs, as this is ultimately more sustainable.
