Hello everyone, I have an issue with my BILLY closet doors, which keep squeaking despite being installed correctly. I have followed all instructions carefully and properly tightened all screws and fittings.

I am interested in understanding why some BILLY doors squeak even after what seems to be proper installation. Are there known causes, such as material properties, the use of lubricants, or specific factors like humidity or weight load?

I would appreciate detailed explanations and possible solutions, as it is important for me to eliminate the squeaking permanently without having to replace the doors.

Squeaking in BILLY doors despite correct installation can have several causes. One common reason is the hinges themselves: they are usually made of metal and plastic, and friction during movement can produce noise.

Another possible cause is insufficient lubrication. Even with proper installation, the hinge bearings can sometimes be dry, or the plastic components may wear slightly. Applying a suitable lubricant—preferably silicone or Teflon spray—can help.

Additionally, the door may slightly “shift” due to load or moisture, which changes the friction conditions at the hinges. Damp environments increase the likelihood of squeaking because wood and plastic expand, creating more friction.

In summary, I recommend first inspecting the hinges carefully, treating them with an appropriate lubricant if necessary, and moving the doors several times to distribute the lubricant evenly.

I can confirm exactly that. In my case, it was the material of the hinges – they are not lubricated and wear out easily. I also noticed that the doors squeaked more with higher humidity levels.

A tip I can give: use silicone spray, as it not only reduces friction but also does not become sticky. Please don’t use too much, as dirt might get trapped in the hinge.

If that doesn’t help, check if the doors are fitted too tightly in the frame, as that can also cause unwanted noises. Sometimes, slightly adjusting the hinges with a screwdriver can also help.

I would like to add that, besides hinges and lubrication, the overall construction also plays a role. Although BILLY cabinet doors are made of MDF with a veneer, this material can expand and contract slightly due to temperature changes and humidity, which puts additional stress on the hinges.

Additionally, misalignment during installation can be subtle: if the cabinet carcass is not perfectly level or the mounting brackets are slightly warped, it causes small misalignments of the door. These misalignments put pressure on the hinges, resulting in recurring squeaking.

My advice is to check the cabinet’s alignment with a spirit level and verify the flatness of the shelves and walls. Even minor irregularities can explain the problem. Afterwards, adjust the hinges if necessary and lubricate them well.

That’s a good tip, especially since it doesn’t damage the device. However, I can confirm that sometimes, even with proper installation, the material’s behavior over time plays a role. In my case, a BILLY door creaked intermittently for weeks until the surfaces had settled against each other.

A little patience can help as well—particularly when humidity levels in the room fluctuate, causing the material to react differently.

It’s great that several helpful points have already been mentioned here. Maybe someone else has experience with alternative hinge types or replaceable fittings?
