I am currently looking into which colors of the BILLY shelves from IKEA are the easiest to maintain. I am particularly interested in how different surface finishes and color options perform in daily use in terms of cleaning and durability. Specifically, I’m wondering whether the classic white can simply be cleaned with a damp cloth, or if darker or special coatings offer advantages when it comes to resisting stains, scratches, or visible signs of wear.
Do you have any experience or can you estimate which colors are best suited for households where the shelves are used heavily or might get dirty more quickly? I’m really looking forward to your opinions and tips!

Interesting question you’ve raised.
To get straight to the point: ease of maintenance depends not only on the color but also strongly on the surface texture. The classic BILLY shelves have a melamine resin coating, which is generally quite durable.
White is naturally more prone to visible marks due to its brightness, especially when it comes to dust, fingerprints, or greasy hands. However, these can usually be wiped away easily, and colored stains tend to be less likely to stick compared to other surfaces.
On the other hand, dark or very glossy finishes may be more susceptible to scratches, which are more noticeable there. In those cases, cleaning doesn’t help much because even the smallest micro-scratches remain visible.
It’s difficult to give a clear recommendation without knowing the specific usage scenario. But when it comes to everyday practicality, I would lean more towards a matte shade in light or medium-light tones.
I’m curious if anyone else has practical tips!

I have a classic white BILLY shelf at home and I think it works great as long as you dust and wipe it regularly. Of course, after a while it doesn’t look absolutely flawless anymore, but white is really easy to maintain since you often only need to wipe it with a damp cloth.
That’s true, but honestly: who doesn’t clean their furniture regularly? ;-) I think a bit more care is worth it because the white shelf looks bright and inviting, which is especially nice in smaller rooms.
On the other hand, I’ve noticed some friends prefer darker finishes because scratches are less noticeable there. That’s definitely a good point if you have small children at home or if the shelf gets a lot of use and rearranging.
My conclusion: White is great if you keep up with the maintenance, but dark surfaces definitely have their charm when it comes to hiding signs of wear. 🙂

To add some structured notes on ease of maintenance for different color shades of the BILLY shelves:
- White and light variants: The surface is usually made of melamine-coated wood-based material. This coating is moisture-resistant and can be easily wiped clean with a mild detergent. Disadvantage: Dust, dirt, and fingerprints are more visible due to the light color, requiring more frequent cleaning.
- Darker colors (e.g., dark birch, dark brown): The surface is also melamine-coated but has a darker pigmentation. This color better conceals dust and light dirt but makes scratches and wear more noticeable. Additionally, matte finishes tend to be more practical in everyday use than high-gloss ones, as they show fewer reflections.
- Painted variants: These are less common for BILLY, but with such surfaces, cleaning is often more demanding and abrasive cleaners should be avoided to prevent damage to the paint.
Regarding cleaning agents, strong solvents or abrasive cleaners are generally not recommended, as they can damage the surfaces.
Recommendation: For the easiest everyday maintenance, light to medium-light matte melamine surfaces are advantageous. Dark colors are ideal if more dust and dirt hiding is desired, but maintenance challenges due to scratches should be anticipated.
I hope this summary helps with your decision-making.

Guys, I find this topic really interesting! Especially because BILLY shelves are found in so many homes.
I have two shelves myself in different colors: one white and one in a dark birch finish.
Absolutely, I can only confirm that! If you regularly wipe the white shelves, they look fresh and clean. A tip from me: using a soft microfiber cloth works best, as it prevents quick visible streaks on the smooth surface.
That’s the same for me! The dark shelf always looks a bit sturdier and more rustic, but scratches from moving or loading it stand out much more. So actually, for a low-maintenance appearance, I would recommend a lighter, matte color, even if it may seem less practical at first glance.
Overall, I can only say: if you clean a lot, the color doesn’t matter so much. If you prefer to relax and don’t want to reach for the cloth all the time, it’s best to choose medium-light to dark, non-glossy surfaces.
Looking forward to hearing what else you find out!
