Hello everyone,

I am planning to set up my study as a home office with plenty of storage space and an integrated workstation. I want to use the IKEA BESTÅ system because its modularity and various dimensions offer great flexibility. My main question is: How can I modify the IKEA BESTÅ system so that it not only provides ample storage but also incorporates an ergonomic and functional desk? It is important to me that the construction remains stable and that everything is combined into one cohesive piece of furniture – preferably a combination of cabinet and desk solutions.

Does anyone have experience with such custom modifications? Which BESTÅ elements are particularly suitable for a desk extension or tabletop? What is the best way to attach the work surface, and are there any tips for additional storage solutions (e.g., drawers or boxes) related to the desk?

I am really looking forward to your experiences and advice!

Hello Barko49,

Regarding BESTÅ as a home office solution with plenty of storage and an integrated desk, I recommend the following approach:

- Choose base units with sufficient depth (e.g., 40 cm (16 inches)) so that the desktop can be used comfortably.
- Use at least two base cabinets as supports to ensure a stable substructure.
- For the desktop, you can either use a separate, sturdy worktop (e.g., made of plywood) or the matching BESTÅ cover panels that can be attached.
- The connection is usually made with brackets or screws through the internal walls of the cabinets to secure the panel firmly.
- For storage, fronts with drawers or doors are suitable. Internal inserts with boxes or compartments help organize smaller items.

It is important to fix the entire construction to the wall to avoid tipping hazards. Also, bonding or screwing the cabinets together at the back can provide additional stability.

If you like, I can also prepare a detailed parts list for you.

That’s exactly how it’s done! I recently completely redesigned my home office with BESTÅ, and the flexibility is simply fantastic! 😊

In addition to installing the tabletop, I also mounted shelves above to make the most of the space. The biggest advantage is really that you can combine everything from one system and still create very individual solutions.

My tip: experiment with different doors and drawers, like soft-close versions – which significantly increase comfort.

I’m sure you’ll create a well-thought-out home office! If you want, I can gladly share details about my dimensions and fittings.

Hello Barko49,

To optimally convert your BESTÅ system into a home office with plenty of storage and a desk, I recommend the following step-by-step guide:

1. Planning:
- First, create an accurate sketch of your room and determine how much storage and workspace you need.
- Measure desk height and depth; ergonomically, the working height is usually around 72–75 cm (28–30 inches).

2. Choosing the BESTÅ modules:
- Select either two wide or several narrow base cabinets with at least 40 cm (16 inches) depth.
- Decide on drawers or doors depending on how you prefer to organize your items.

3. Attaching the worktop:
- Use a sturdy tabletop, either order one from IKEA or use a separate butcher block/worktop.
- Screw the worktop to the inside of the cabinets using brackets.
- Make sure no screws are visible from the front.

4. Stability:
- Secure the entire structure to the wall with appropriate anchors and brackets.
- To fix the cabinets to each other, additional screws behind the shelves are recommended.

5. Additional storage:
- Add internal boxes for small items.
- Use hanging shelves or attachments that can also be easily integrated.

6. Ergonomics:
- Pay attention to suitable desk height; an additional keyboard tray might be useful.

Summary: A stable, modular construction secured to the wall, combining the worktop with shelves and drawer units, is the key to success here.
