Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into how to prevent damage to painted Malm surfaces. I am particularly interested in which preventive measures are practical for everyday use to avoid scratches, wear, or discoloration—especially since the paint on this type of furniture is quite sensitive. Do you use any special cleaners, protective films, or have tips for proper care and handling when dealing with common stresses like abrasion from objects or moisture? I would appreciate informed advice and, if possible, personal experiences, especially regarding whether certain products might do more harm than good. Thank you in advance!

It is best to avoid using aggressive cleaning agents and to prevent scratches on frequently used surfaces by using protective pads. Applying a layer of furniture wax can also help, but it is not a cure-all.

When it comes to moisture: wipe it off immediately.

Hello Martin6,

I would like to go into more detail about this issue because painted surfaces like those on Malm furniture are quite sensitive. First of all, it’s important to note that the paint is usually an acrylic or polyurethane (PU) coating, which provides some protective layer but shows mechanical damage such as scratches very quickly.

To reduce damage, I recommend the following approach:

1. Protection with coverings: For frequently used surfaces, such as desk tops or sideboards, always use a protective covering. This can be a textured fabric or a glass plate. The glass plate offers additional protection, especially against liquids and mechanical impacts.

2. Cleaning products: Use only very mild cleaning agents, ideally pH-neutral ones, and a soft microfiber cloth. Most aggressive cleaners contain solvents that attack the coating and cause it to become dull over time.

3. Avoid moisture: Although the surface is painted, moisture can penetrate the edges. Therefore, it is important to wipe away liquids quickly to prevent swelling or warping of the wood.

4. Regular maintenance: Occasional treatment with a high-quality furniture care product designed for painted surfaces can refresh the protective layer and improve surface gloss as well as protection.

5. Mechanical damage: Avoid placing sharp-edged or rough objects directly on the surface. When moving items, always lift them instead of dragging.

I am also curious to know if you treated the Malm surfaces with a protective layer right after purchase or only afterwards?

Best regards!

This is a very important point. Most damage is caused by using the wrong cleaning and care products, which leave residues or microscopic scratches.

Furthermore, I recommend avoiding any wax-based or oil-based products, as these can alter the finish over time and leave unpleasant film residues.

This is essential, especially for furniture that is used daily. Alternatively, special protective films made of transparent, scratch-resistant plastic are available, which can be cut to precise measurements. These often represent a worthwhile investment.

One more tip: avoid placing wet flower vases or cups directly on the surfaces without coasters. Even the smallest water stains are difficult to remove and can permanently damage the finish.
