Hello everyone,
I recently purchased some IKEA Hemnes furniture, specifically dressers and nightstands made of solid pine with a painted finish. I have pets — cats and a dog — and I’m concerned about how to clean the furniture properly and gently without damaging the surface or causing unpleasant stains.
My main questions are:
- What cleaning products are recommended for painted wooden furniture when dealing with pet-related dirt like fur, scratch marks, or small stains?
- How can I remove pet hair effectively and permanently without roughening the surface?
- Are there any special cleaning procedures or precautions for IKEA Hemnes furniture when living with pets that I should be aware of?
I really want to avoid cracks or discoloration caused by improper care. Any helpful tips or experiences would be much appreciated!

Hello tumisael,
your question is well posed, especially since the combination of pets and lacquered wooden furniture can be quite challenging. With IKEA HEMNES, which is made of solid pine and coated with a satin matte lacquer, you need to be careful not to damage the surface.
Here is my suggestion in several steps:
- First, remove pet hair: I use a slightly damp microfiber lambswool roller or alternatively an anti-static cloth. It is important that the cloth or roller is not too wet to avoid the wood swelling or damaging the finish.
- For stubborn stains (e.g., scratches from dogs or cat paws) I recommend cleaning furniture soap or a mild dish detergent diluted in lukewarm water. Avoid harsh cleaners like alcohol or ammonia, as they can dissolve the lacquer.
- When applying: Always wipe gently and in the direction of the wood grain. Immediately afterwards, wipe again with a dry, soft cloth to prevent moisture from seeping in.
- Scratches can often be well concealed with special furniture touch-up markers in the matching color. However, it is best to test them first in an inconspicuous area.
I am curious to know what kind of stains or dirt you have noticed so far? Have you already tried how your furniture reacts to certain cleaning agents?

Hey tumisael,
I have two cats myself and have seen some HEMNES furniture take a bit of a beating from their "clawing whirlwind." 😅
Pet hair? Just use a static roller or a damp microfiber cloth, as Dilen suggests.
Scratches? Often the only solution is sanding or covering them up – but hey, a little character on the furniture is part of the charm, right? 😉
And a tip to finish: In the morning, spend a little time petting your furry friends to reduce the amount of loose hair on your furniture.
Looking forward to seeing what you decide!

Hello tumisael,
to systematically answer your very valid questions, I will go into more detail about the material and the care process:
The IKEA HEMNES furniture is made of solid pine wood, sealed with a satin-matte lacquer. This lacquer offers protection but is sensitive to moisture and aggressive chemicals if handled improperly.
- To remove pet hair, I recommend using a combination of a slightly damp microfiber cloth and an antistatic brush. It is important not to make the furniture too wet, as moisture can penetrate the wood and cause cracks.
- For stains from urine, saliva, or other secretions, act immediately: blot moisture with an absorbent paper towel and then clean with a damp cloth using a mild dish soap and water mixture. Afterwards, wipe immediately with a dry cloth.
- Scratches are often particularly stubborn. Try furniture wax or touch-up sticks in matching colors. For larger damages, sanding and repainting is often necessary.
- Tip: regularly care for the furniture with a suitable wood care oil or a polish-like wax to make the surface more resistant – but only use products that are explicitly designed for lacquered surfaces.
I would be interested to know if your HEMNES furniture already has any damage and what your current cleaning routine looks like.

So far, luckily, there is no major damage to the furniture. Mainly, pet hair buildup has been noticeable, along with a few tiny, barely visible scratches on the bedside tables, probably from the cats playing. My current cleaning routine is quite simple: I try to wipe the surfaces daily with a dry cloth and occasionally use a standard wood care product, although I now feel it might be leaving the surface slightly sticky.
What exactly do you mean by a "mild dish soap and water mixture"? What should the ratio be, and how damp should the cloth be?
