Hello everyone,

I am planning to assemble a Billy bookcase together with my children. I want to ensure that we complete all the steps as efficiently as possible while also prioritizing safety during the assembly. The children are in elementary school (7 and 9 years old) and will actively help – but of course under supervision, without any risk of injury.

I am interested in experiences and tips on the best way to organize the assembly with children, what to consider in advance (tools, components, location), and which safety measures you especially recommend. Are there age-appropriate tasks that can be given to the children without overwhelming them, but still involve them meaningfully?

I look forward to your practical advice and recommendations, including any personal experiences. Thanks in advance!

Hello Ryanru,

I would recommend that you handle the heavy parts yourself and let the children take on smaller, safe tasks, such as holding screws or passing tools. Keep tools with sharp edges or drill bits out of their reach whenever possible. Safety shoes are also a good idea.

Hello Ryanru,

your question is very well posed and hits the core issue when involving children in such projects. Fundamentally, when assembling a BILLY shelf, the main concern is securing the shelf safely to the wall to prevent tipping hazards. Especially when children are involved, you should be particularly careful that no heavy parts are left unattended.

I recommend a clearly structured approach:

1. Prepare the workspace: create enough space and organize all parts.
2. Place tools safely – ideally within your reach, but out of reach of children who are not yet able to handle tools.
3. Child-appropriate tasks: screws are often not the safest items. Your children could help unpack shelf parts, observe the assembly, or assist with small tasks like holding screw strips.
4. Safety equipment: since the BILLY shelf is often installed in tight spaces, it is important to avoid tripping hazards like loose screws lying around.

It is also important to take care of the wall mounting yourself, as this involves plugs and screws in the wall.

Question: are you using a cordless drill or a manual screwdriver? This is important for safety, as some tools can be very dangerous for children.

Good luck with your project!

Hi Ryanru 😊,

I think it’s great that you want to involve your kids in the assembly! BILLY shelves are generally simple to put together, but with children, safety and fun go hand in hand.

A little tip: Wrap the screwdriver handle with some rubber or fabric to give kids a better grip if they take on smaller tasks.

That’s exactly what I mean – and feel free to have them read the assembly instructions aloud or sort the parts, which makes them proud and keeps them occupied.

Be careful with drilling into the wall! It’s better if an adult handles that alone, as sparks or dust can be generated.

Keep water and small snacks ready to keep everyone relaxed. Good luck and have fun! :-)

Hello Ryanru,

I would like to add that it is very helpful to mentally go through the assembly of the BILLY shelf beforehand and inform the children about each step in detail. It is especially important to explain to the children that sharp or pointed tools are off-limits and may only be used under supervision.

By the way, I find this question very relevant. If you are using a cordless drill, you should reduce the speed and only involve the children in completely safe tasks. A suitable task for children could also be inserting the back panel – this is a good opportunity to explain fit and let them feel the correct position with their fingers.

Also try to arrange the workspace so that no parts are on the floor to avoid tripping hazards. Safety shoes are a good idea, but children often do not want to wear them voluntarily.

And last but not least: bring patience! Children learn by watching and imitating. Every little bit of participation creates a sense of achievement.

How about your space conditions? Is there enough free area to assemble the shelf?

Hi Ryanru,

Organization is everything. Sort all the parts carefully beforehand and give the children simpler tasks, such as unpacking the individual boards. Screws should only be handled by adults.

Make sure to have a solid, level surface for assembly. This helps prevent tripping hazards and keeps all parts clearly organized.
