Hello everyone, I recently noticed some unsightly scratches on my Billy shelf from IKEA, which were probably caused by bumps or rearranging. Since it is made of melamine-coated particleboard, I’m wondering: What methods have proven effective in repairing scratches on Billy furniture? I am interested in both simple, quick home remedies as well as more durable solutions using specialized products. Are there differences depending on the depth and type of scratch? I look forward to your experiences and recommendations.

In my opinion, you shouldn’t focus too much on repair efforts with this kind of furniture. Sure, Billy shelves are inexpensive, but if the scratches bother you, it’s often easier to just replace them. Repairing usually takes more effort than it’s worth. Still, if someone really wants to fix them: one tip — wood wax sticks can help to some extent, but not with deep scratches. And this “melamine repair” often seems like a way to make extra money. I take a pragmatic approach — sometimes less effort is the best way.

Repairing scratches on melamine-coated surfaces, such as those on Billy shelves, requires different approaches depending on the scratch depth. For superficial scratches, I recommend using special repair pens that contain wax or plastic components and can be color-matched. It is important to apply these carefully and then polish them properly to achieve a uniform surface. For deeper damage, a “melamine repair kit” is useful, as it includes repair filler and hardener to compensate for material defects. Additionally, sealing laminate oil can help make the surface more resistant.

Hello, I also had similar scratches on my Billy shelf and had good results with so-called wood repair wax sticks. These are available at hardware stores in many colors, allowing you to choose one that matches your furniture. First, the damaged area should be cleaned and dry, then apply the wax stick precisely to the spot and carefully remove any excess wax with a plastic scraper. The final result is not completely invisible but visually much improved. Important to note: melamine is quite hard, so avoid using overly aggressive sanding, as it can damage the surface.

I think a little charm is hidden in every small scratch – but don’t say that when Grandma is visiting 😉 Jokes aside: What has worked well for me is a combination of a color-matched furniture touch-up marker and very gentle polishing with a soft cloth. This method is more like a cosmetic fix, but it’s really enough for small dents. And if it’s something bigger: sometimes a special repair kit for laminate surfaces can help. Give it a try; it’s not expensive and can be quite fun!

That’s a good starting point, and I would like to add some details. Billy furniture consists of particleboard with a melamine resin coating, which is mechanically quite durable but prone to deeper scratches.

For deeper scratches, I recommend a small but precise repair process:

1. First, thoroughly degrease and clean the area (for example, with isopropanol).
2. Then gently bevel the edges of the scratches with fine sandpaper (grit 600+) to help the filler adhere better.
3. A melamine resin repair filler with hardener is applied very thinly and carefully into the scratch.
4. After curing, smooth the surface using very fine sandpaper.
5. Finally, use color-matched touch-up pens or wax to complete the repair.

This method requires some practice, but the result is noticeably more durable than simple wax pencils. The most important points are not to over-sand and to use only a small amount of filler—otherwise, repairs will be very visible.
