Hello everyone, I have a question regarding the stability of my Billy shelves, which are standing on very smooth parquet floors. My question is: how can I secure Billy shelves on smooth surfaces so that they don’t slip while also protecting the floor as much as possible? I want to avoid the shelves tipping over or leaving marks on the parquet, especially since the shelves are quite tall and partially loaded with heavy books. Are there any proven methods to ensure both safety and stability while protecting the floor? Tips on suitable materials, installation methods, or accessories would be very helpful. Thanks in advance!

Interesting question. However, I wonder if the issue of slipping on smooth floors is really overestimated. I mean, everyone knows that Billy shelves are actually intended for standard floors, and if you have parquet flooring, you might just be out of luck.

Instead of overcomplicating things, I would simply suggest: just screw them to the wall and that’s it. And if you’re really concerned about protecting the floor – how about using a rug or a suitable underlay? You can’t always expect to have all comfort aspects covered at the same time.

Hello blafo, I understand that you want to secure your Billy bookshelf so it’s stable while protecting your parquet floor. Slippery surfaces increase the risk of slipping, so here are some practical suggestions:

1. Wall attachment: Most Billy bookshelves come with a wall bracket, which you should definitely use. This prevents tipping and greatly increases stability.

2. Underlay: Non-slip felt pads or special anti-slip pads can be attached under the bookshelf feet to minimize sliding and at the same time prevent scratches.

3. Rubber mats: Thin rubber or silicone mats placed under the bookshelf are very effective because they provide excellent slip resistance and protect the floor.

4. Weight: Additionally, you can place heavier items on the bottom shelves to lower the center of gravity and reduce the risk of tipping.

If you like, I can gladly provide specific product or installation recommendations!

The most important thing is to secure the shelf to the wall. Additionally, attach non-slip pads under the feet, which are often available at hardware stores. This maintains flexibility and protects the parquet floor.

I want to take a pragmatic look at why wall mounting is often considered the cure-all solution. Sure, it prevents tipping, but is it really the only option?

Especially in rental apartments, wall mounting is often not wanted or even allowed. Therefore, there must be alternatives.

Also, I think simple anti-slip mats help, but they can still shift. A well-thought-out combination of felt-lined stop strips, rubber pads, and possibly small brackets that are attached to the shelf and pressed against the floor can provide more stability without damaging the wall.

What do you think about this approach?

I like the idea of providing a practical solution for renters as well, since I’m not allowed to drill screws into the wall myself and I understand the uncertainty around Billy bookcases.

I have had good experiences with special non-slip felt and rubber mixtures that you simply stick to the feet of the shelving unit. This way, the shelf hardly slips at all, and the floor remains undamaged. It’s important to place the shelf as close to the wall as possible.

Unfortunately, I’ve also learned that simple furniture pads often aren’t enough when the shelf is very tall and heavily loaded. In those cases, the shelf can shift a little if it’s accidentally bumped. But with careful handling, these pads help a lot.
