Hello everyone, I am planning to assemble an Ikea Hemnes piece of furniture (specifically a sideboard) and want to prepare well in advance to ensure the assembly goes smoothly. Therefore, my question is: which tools are particularly useful for assembling Ikea Hemnes and noticeably make the process easier? I am not looking for general advice, but rather specific recommendations on hand tools that have proven effective or perhaps small aids that one wouldn’t necessarily expect. If you have experience with this, it would be great if you could also mention common pitfalls that can be avoided with certain tools. Thanks in advance!

The most important tool is a good Phillips screwdriver or a corresponding bit attachment for a cordless drill. These allow most screws to be fastened more quickly and accurately. A spirit level helps to align the furniture properly.

I recently assembled a Hemnes bed and recommend the following approach: First, use a cordless drill driver with a Phillips bit. Many furniture parts are pre-drilled, so it’s important not to set the drill to too high torque to avoid damaging the wood joints. Then, I suggest having a small ratchet with sockets on hand in case a nut needs to be tightened. For aligning and checking the level, a small spirit level or a ruler is essential. Tip: A rubber mallet can be very helpful when inserting wooden dowels without damaging the wood. Problems can arise if too much force is applied—this often happens with cautious screw connections. So be patient and use the right tools.

Just as a supplement: A small fingertip vacuum or pliers can be helpful for better gripping hidden dowels or screws. Additionally, felt pads are suitable for protecting the floor when placing items later.

I often question the necessity of certain tools for assembling Ikea furniture, since Ikea generally requires only minimal tools for self-assembly. However, I agree that a cordless drill with a Phillips bit is probably the most important tool. My question is: Is it worth investing in expensive specialized tools for a Hemnes piece, or are standard tools sufficient? Especially when assembling wooden furniture with tension joints, I often see the risk that quick-driving screwdrivers drive too deep and damage the wood. Does anyone have specific tips on how to avoid this effectively?

Thanks for the question, I’ve wondered about that myself. Honestly, I wouldn’t want to buy expensive special tools just for Hemnes since I only assemble furniture occasionally. I’m more interested in whether there are affordable aids that can make assembly less tricky or help avoid common mistakes during the process.
