Hello everyone, I am currently facing the challenge of securely mounting IKEA Metod wall cabinets on a drywall (gypsum board) surface. The wall is a standard partition wall without any wooden or steel framework directly at the mounting point, and I want to avoid the cabinets eventually pulling out or becoming loose. The cabinets themselves are quite heavy, especially when filled with dishes, and they need to hold securely over the long term.

My question is therefore: Which mounting methods and specialized anchors are best suited to ensure high load capacity and safety? Are there any particular considerations for drywall, such as distance from edges, number of fastening points, or technical tips?

I would appreciate detailed experiences or recommendations, including advice on mistakes to avoid.

For securely mounting IKEA Metod wall cabinets on drywall without a load-bearing substructure, I recommend:

- Using special heavy-duty anchors designed for hollow walls, such as metal expansion anchors (Molly bolts) or toggle bolts, which have wider load distribution.
- Using multiple fastening points per cabinet, ideally at least 3 to 4 screws per cabinet, to better distribute the load.
- Maintaining a distance of at least 10cm (4 inches) from the edges and ends of the drywall panels to prevent breakouts.
- If possible, using a small scanner to locate the underlying substructure (e.g., metal studs or wooden battens) and fastening directly into them, as this is the safest option.
- Ensuring the cabinet hangers lie fully flat against the wall to avoid any lever effect.

This approach generally offers the best combination of safety and durability. Direct screws into drywall without special anchors are not an option, as they do not hold permanently.

If you like, I can also provide a specific list of recommended products and installation instructions.

I am adding to Paxton38’s advice with a simple step-by-step guide for mounting IKEA Metod wall cabinets on drywall:

1. Preparation: Check the wall to see if there are metal studs or wooden battens behind the drywall. If so, it is best to screw directly into them.

2. Marking: The top hanging rail of the Metod cabinet units usually goes at a specific height – use a spirit level and pencil to mark the fixing points.

3. Choice of anchors: For plain drywall surfaces, I recommend high-quality metal Molly bolts. Plastic expansion anchors do not provide enough support, as the drywall can break out easily.

4. Drilling: It is important to drill the hole exactly to the size of the anchor, not too large.

5. Setting the anchors: Insert the Molly bolts properly and tighten them with the special tool or screw to activate the expansion mechanism correctly.

6. Screws: Screw into the anchors, hook the cabinet hanging rail in, and gradually apply weight. Do not leave the screws too loose.

A common mistake is using only one or two anchors – especially for longer cabinets, always use all the mounting points.

Finally, consider the weight of fully loaded cabinets – it is better to plan at least a 50% safety margin.

I would like to add some technical details that are often overlooked but are crucial for securely mounting wall cabinets on drywall.

This is basically correct, but it is important to match the type of anchor precisely to the wall thickness and the existing cavity. Drywall panels typically have a thickness of 12.5 mm (1/2 inch), but the cavity behind them can vary greatly.

- Toggle bolts usually require at least about 30 mm (1 1/4 inches) of cavity to fully expand. If the cavity is smaller, they may not fit or hold properly.
- For shallow cavities, I recommend special toggle anchors or high-quality metal Molly bolts with adjustable expansion.

Additional tips:

- Before installation, insert all anchors provisionally and test them with a slight pull to check if they sit well or move.
- The screw spacing should be at least 20 cm (8 inches) to distribute the load and minimize stress on the drywall.
- Avoid mounting close to panel joints, as these are structurally weak.
- It is also useful to add an additional cross brace inside the top trim strip of the Metod wall cabinets to distribute the load across multiple anchors.

Weight must also be considered. A single cabinet can easily weigh 20–30 kg (44–66 lbs) when filled. The construction must be designed not only for static but also for dynamic loads—that is, to withstand forces from opening, closing, and minor impacts.

How is your wall mainly constructed? Is it a completely free drywall without metal studs across the width, or are profiles only sporadically present? This can greatly affect the mounting behavior.
