Hello everyone, I am currently working on making our IKEA Besta shelving unit more child-friendly, as our little ones have started climbing on the furniture and I want to minimize potential hazards. My specific question is: Are there any clear and practical guides or proven methods for modifying a Besta unit to make it more stable, secure, and child-safe—such as using special fasteners, child-friendly handles, or padding on corners and edges? I am also interested in tips on whether certain additional materials are needed and how to make doors or drawers safer without having to replace the entire furniture. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi, this is a really important topic! 😄 I made the Besta units in our home child-friendly, and it actually worked well with a few simple tricks and some creativity. First, it’s important to securely fix the shelving to the wall, which already prevents major accidents. Then, I added soft corner protectors that are inexpensive—younger children won’t hurt themselves on them anymore. Also, I replaced the handles with rounded, child-safe ones to avoid sharp edges. If doors are a concern, you can install child safety straps that prevent doors from slamming shut or opening uncontrollably. Of course, there isn’t an official IKEA guide for this kind of modification, but these tips worked quite well! Good luck with your DIY project!

To address the question directly: There is no official step-by-step guide from IKEA for making the Besta system child-friendly. However, a safe solution can be achieved through technical modifications. First, I recommend wall-mounting the unit using appropriate anchors and strong fasteners to completely prevent tipping. Additionally, I suggest replacing metal handles with rounded plastic or silicone handles to minimize the risk of injury. For corner protection, soft rubber edge guards are useful; these can be attached with double-sided mounting tape without significantly affecting the furniture’s appearance. If drawers or doors are installed, extra child safety locks should be added. In households with very young children, magnetic door locks that require some skill to open are especially advisable. Is there an option to add a soft foam edging to the shelf edges to further reduce the risk of bumps? I am also interested to know: Do you use the Besta at seating depth for seating surfaces, or as traditional storage? This information would help to refine the recommendations.

Thanks for your question! I primarily use Besta as conventional storage, with the unit featuring both doors and open compartments. It’s not really intended for seating; rather, it should serve as sturdy and child-safe organizational furniture. There is also a power outlet nearby in the room, so I need to ensure the wall mounting allows for cable management. If there are any specific recommendations for this, I would appreciate them. The edges are quite sharp, so I definitely want to install good protective covers there. I find magnetic door catches interesting, also to reduce the risk of finger pinching.

In summary, the following points should be considered for a child-friendly modification of the IKEA Besta:

- Wall mounting using appropriate anchors and screws based on the wall type
- Replacing the original handles with rounded, non-sharp alternatives
- Using soft rubber corner protectors or specialized edge guards
- Installing child safety locks on doors (e.g., magnetic catches or latches)
- Optional foam or rubber padding on frequently used edges
- Checking the mounting for cable management to avoid blocking electrical outlets

There is no official IKEA guide, but many practical experiences can be found in relevant forums and DIY communities. Implementation requires basic tool handling skills and some craftsmanship.

Absolutely true! I would also add that the need for adjustments is constantly growing, especially with children. For example, I retrofitted the doors with soft-close dampers – this not only prevents pinching but also creates a calmer daily routine. Plus, if someone enjoys DIY, you can cover the surfaces with child-safe films that also reduce small fingerprints.
