ᐅ How sturdy are IKEA BRIMNES beds according to long-term users?

KarmeHello everyone,
I have been considering getting a bed from the IKEA Brimnes series, specifically the double bed model. Since I see this as a long-term investment, I am especially interested in the stability and durability of these beds from the perspective of people who have been using this model for several years.
My main questions are:
- How does the BRIMNES bed hold up under continuous use, for example, 3-5 years or more?
- Are there any known issues with wear, material fatigue, or assembly defects that only appear after extended use?
- What about squeaking, wobbly structures, or deformations?
I would be very grateful for any insights or experiences, as the online reviews are quite contradictory and I want to avoid making a wrong choice.
Best regards!

Hello Karme,
your question about the long-term stability of the IKEA BRIMNES bed is very well posed and highlights important points. As someone who has been using this model for nearly 4 years, I can share some detailed experiences with you.
First of all: stability greatly depends on correct assembly. The supplied hardware is solid, but you should make sure that all screws and connectors are firmly tightened. It doesn’t hurt to check them again after about a year.
Regarding the material: the bed is mainly made of coated particleboard and MDF panels. These materials are acceptable for the price, but obviously not comparable to solid wood constructions. Some material fatigue under continuous load is therefore normal. Over the years, I noticed a slight give at the sides of the bed, which shows up as small gaps and minimal movement.
There was no creaking initially; for areas where metal meets wood, I recommend regularly oiling or treating them with some wax if necessary.
Another point is the slatted bed base. The BRIMNES is often sold without a slatted base included. Choosing a suitable, good-quality slatted base also has a strong impact on stability and sleep quality. Cheap models can unnecessarily stress the bed frame.
In conclusion, I would say: with careful assembly and regular checks, the BRIMNES offers acceptable stability for a medium term of up to 5 years, possibly longer if handled with great care. For a long-term bed with decades of durability, I would recommend a more robust alternative.
It remains a question of how intensively the bed is used and the weight of the users – both significantly affect durability. What are your specific conditions?

Some material fatigue under constant load is therefore normal. That’s the dilemma with IKEA furniture: everything is designed not to last necessarily, but for the price, they market it as a long-term solution.
I hope you’re not seriously expecting the BRIMNES to hold up like a carpenter-made piece. It’s more like ‘disposable furniture’ with a few years of built-in durability.
If you expect more, you should invest in more expensive beds. Luxury or at least solid quality simply isn’t an option at IKEA – and if it is, you’ll be paying many times more.

How does the BRIMNES bed hold up with long-term use, for example 3-5 years or more?I have been using my BRIMNES double bed for 3 years now and would like to share my experience. For me, everyday practicality was especially important, and I didn’t treat the bed gently – multiple moves, frequent assembly and disassembly.
At first, I was concerned the screws might loosen, but regular tightening kept it stable.
After 3 years, the frame still looks solid, with no visible warping or cracks. The slatted bed base, which I purchased separately, is of good quality and provides strong support for the mattress – I believe this is an important factor for the overall impression.
What I did notice, however, is that after extended use the material no longer looks quite as fresh; the surface finish shows minor scratches, which is probably normal.
Overall, I would say it is stable enough for everyday use, considering the price. However, it’s rather average as a long-term investment.

The combination of BRIMNES with a high-quality slatted bed base not only improves sleeping comfort but also significantly relieves the bed frame structure. It was the same for me – after switching to a better slatted base, the minor issues with creaking and wobbling almost disappeared.

But I think it’s important to realistically assess the limitations of the materials and construction. For the price, BRIMNES beds are surprisingly well made. You just can’t expect miracles, and that’s only fair.
