Hello everyone,

I recently had a small mishap with my IKEA Besta furniture: there are adhesive residues left on the surface from stickers or protective films, and I am now looking for a way to remove these residues as thoroughly as possible without damaging the surface.

The surface is melamine resin coated, so I want to avoid aggressive agents or sharp tools to prevent scratches or dull spots. I also don’t want to leave any sticky residue from cleaning products.

Does anyone have experience or recommendations on the best way to remove these adhesive residues?

Which products and methods have worked well for you? I’m patient, but the solution should remain practical. Thanks in advance for your tips!

Hello belogau,

To gently and effectively remove adhesive residues from melamine resin-coated IKEA BESTA furniture surfaces, I recommend the following based on verified experiences and material compatibility:

- First, loosen coarse residues with warm water and a microfiber cloth. This cleans the surface and prepares it for further treatment steps.
- Then, you can carefully use isopropyl alcohol (70-90%) or a common acetone-free nail polish remover. Apply a small amount to a cloth and gently rub off the adhesive. Caution: products containing acetone can damage the coating.
- For stubborn spots, a specialized adhesive remover suitable for furniture can be used, but it should be primarily intended for melamine resin-coated furniture. Always test on an inconspicuous area first.
- Avoid sharp scrapers, as they can damage the surface. Plastic scrapers are the better choice.

After removing the adhesive residues, wipe the surface with clean water and dry it.

If these tips are followed, a residue-free and gentle cleaning is usually achievable.

I would like to add that the contact time with alcohol should be short, as prolonged exposure can damage the surface.

My preferred method is:

- Gently push back the adhesive with a plastic spatula.
- Then dampen a tempered microfiber cloth with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol, not dripping wet.
- Rub only lightly and in small areas, avoiding strong mechanical stress.
- After two to three applications, wipe the spot with a clean, damp cloth to remove residue.

If this isn’t enough, there are special solvent-free adhesive removers based on wax that are somewhat gentler. These should also be tested beforehand.

If you like, you can tell me whether the residue is sticky, hard, or tough. That way I might be able to help more specifically.

I know this problem all too well because I once made a mistake when removing stickers and slightly damaged the surface.

What helped me was a lot of patience and a bit of oil – actually baby oil or regular cooking oil. It helps to soften the adhesive residue so you can usually rub it off easily later with a soft cloth.

This is how I proceeded:
- Apply a few drops of oil to the adhesive residue and let it sit for about 10 minutes.
- Then rub gently with a soft, clean cloth.
- Repeat the process if necessary.

Although this method takes some time, it is completely gentle and free of chemical odors. Afterwards, clean the area well with warm water and dish soap to remove the oil.

Maybe this method will help you too? Sometimes the gentle approach is the best solution, especially when you need to be careful.
