Hello everyone,

A few weeks ago, I bought a Billy bookshelf from IKEA, and during assembly, I noticed that the individual shelves and side panels show significant color variations. Some surfaces appear noticeably lighter, while others look darker or even slightly reddish in tone. I understand that slight color differences can occur with particleboard, but this seems quite pronounced. My question to the community: Why does my Billy bookshelf have such strong color differences? Could this be related to the delivery batch, different production processes, or environmental factors such as light or humidity? I want to rule out a manufacturing defect. Maybe someone has experience with the same issue or knows possible causes. Thanks in advance for your insights!

The color variations often occur due to different production batches during the manufacturing process. IKEA uses particle boards that are produced in several runs, which can lead to color discrepancies. Also, check if the shelf is exposed to direct sunlight—UV light can intensify color changes.

That’s exactly right. Additionally, it’s important to note that the surface of a Billy shelf is made of melamine resin. The base panel (particleboard) can already vary during manufacturing since wood chips are not completely uniform.

Another factor could be that different panel thicknesses or glue layers have varying pigmentation. Although IKEA conducts quality control, slight color deviations are unavoidable.

Furthermore, light affects the material differently: UV radiation and room temperature can cause the color to fade or darken over time.

My advice: If the differences are really noticeable, contact IKEA to see if an exchange might be possible.

Good day,

I would like to add that strong color variations in Billy shelves often result from storage before sale or during transport.

While the melamine coating provides protection, it can react differently to environmental factors. Especially if the shelf was assembled and stored in a basement for an extended period or exposed to more humid conditions, the color may change slightly.

I also recommend protecting the furniture from direct light and heat, as these can cause the surface to age unevenly, which may increase color differences.

If you have already opened and assembled the shelf: Did you use all parts from the same package or from multiple packages? Different packages may come from separate production batches, which could explain the color variations.

This is an important point. I would like to add that IKEA intentionally uses different surface finishes on less visible areas of some furniture, such as the back panel in a simpler version, which can cause color variations.

All of these factors play a role. Color differences are never completely avoidable with Billy shelves because they are mass-produced using a limited range of coating colors and raw materials. However, if the differences are truly disturbing, I would contact IKEA and possibly request a replacement. Some tolerance is common in retail, but visible deviations are usually also handled with goodwill.
