Hello everyone, I have a problem with my Billy bookshelf: the drawer slides start squeaking when opening and closing. The noise is quite annoying, especially since the drawers are used several times a day. I have already checked to make sure nothing is sticking, and the rails don’t seem to be bent. Are there any proven tips or methods to silence the drawer slides without affecting the smooth operation or safety of the drawers? Maybe some advice on suitable lubricants or maintenance? Thanks in advance for your tips!

Hello, usually it helps to treat the guide rails with a dry silicone spray. I would avoid oil because it attracts dust and quickly starts squeaking again. Just spray it on, move the drawer a few times, and you’re done.

Interesting question! The squeaking in BILLY drawers usually results from friction between the metal track and plastic or metal rollers. To properly address the issue, I recommend the following steps: First, fully pull out the drawers and inspect the tracks for dirt, dust buildup, or small foreign objects. These can obstruct smooth movement and cause squeaking noises.

Next, use a lint-free cloth to wipe away all visible residue. For lubrication, a high-quality silicone spray is suitable because it repels water and does not attract dirt. Important: Lubrication should be applied only to the runners and rollers, as applying lubricant elsewhere could damage the wood.

One more question: Are your tracks metal with plastic rollers, or are they entirely metal? Depending on this, maintenance varies slightly.

Squeaking in BILLY drawers is really annoying, I know! Recently, I tried using some baby powder – just sprinkle it into the drawer runners and spread it evenly. It works like a dry lubricant and doesn’t attract dirt. It’s inexpensive, lasts a long time, and restores smooth movement to the drawer 😉 Maybe give it a try before turning to specialized products!

That really sounds frustrating, especially in everyday use when you constantly have to push! I think it’s good that you’re careful not to compromise the smooth operation, as this can easily happen with improper maintenance. Have you checked if a screw might be loose or if the track is slightly warped? Sometimes you hear a squeaking noise because materials rub against each other slightly, which is a often overlooked cause.

Care requirements vary slightly depending on the situation.

That’s precisely the key point. Most BILLY shelves use metal telescopic drawer slides with plastic rollers, which require special maintenance. I recommend the following procedure: fully remove the drawer and thoroughly clean the slides to remove all dust. Then, I usually apply a dry PTFE spray, which is more durable than silicone and doesn’t attract dust.

The advantage of PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) is that it creates a very smooth surface, significantly reducing friction. Of course, you should be careful to avoid getting the spray on the wood or veneer, as it can potentially cause stains.

Finally, I perform a short testing phase by opening and closing the drawer several times to allow the spray to distribute evenly and to remove any excess material.

If the squeaking persists, it’s worth checking the installation: sometimes the slides are mounted slightly crooked, or the rollers are worn out, which can also cause noise.
