Hello everyone, I am planning to use some IKEA Hemnes furniture in our home, especially dressers and shelves. Since we have small children, I am wondering how to make these pieces childproof. I am particularly interested in how to prevent accidents when children try to open drawers or tip over the furniture. Are there specific safety devices or techniques that have proven effective for Hemnes furniture? I would also appreciate any advice on whether hardware or handles should be replaced to make them safer. If anyone has experience or concrete tips, I would be very grateful for your answers!

Hello Tarbacary,

First of all, it’s good that you are asking such a detailed question, because there are several important points to consider when childproofing the HEMNES furniture.

1. Tip-over protection: The most important factor is securing the furniture to the wall. IKEA provides anti-tip straps with most HEMNES items, which should definitely be used. Without these, there is a high risk that the furniture could tip over if climbed on.

2. Drawer locks: To prevent unauthorized opening, there are child safety locks for drawers, such as clamp or magnetic locks. These are easy to install without damaging the furniture.

3. Handle design: The HEMNES series has practical handles, but they can sometimes be easy for children to grip. Instead of replacing the handles, it’s better to use drawer locks to limit children’s access.

4. Edge protection: Especially for shelves with open corners, soft, transparent edge protectors help prevent injuries.

5. Materials and stability: HEMNES furniture is usually made of solid wood. This means it is sturdy but also heavy. Always check the anti-tip devices carefully during transport.

I would like to know which specific pieces of furniture you are considering and the ages of your children. That way, I can address potential risks more precisely. Overall, the key is to secure the furniture against tipping and to control access to the drawers to some extent.

Short and direct:
- Always install tilt locks
- Secure drawers with child locks
- Do not replace handles; use locks instead
- Attach edge protectors
This already provides a great deal of safety.

I think it’s great that you are thinking about this! We initially had a lot of trouble because our little one kept pulling on the dresser, and it almost tipped over. It’s really important to take this seriously and not underestimate how curious children can be.

What helped me was securing the anti-tip device firmly and using simple childproof locks on the drawers. Sometimes it can feel overwhelming, but small measures can prevent a lot. How old are your children? If they’re older, some things are easier to explain—but with young kids, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

As a supplement:

- IKEA anti-tip devices should be permanently attached to the back of each piece of furniture. This is not only for stability but also to quickly prevent children from climbing and tipping the furniture.
- For drawer locks, I recommend models with a magnetic release mechanism, as these cause less damage and are hardly visible.
- Avoid changing the handles; this does not improve safety and may damage the furniture or invalidate warranty claims.
- Regularly check all fastenings, especially when furniture usage increases due to children.
- Edge protectors on shelves are beneficial, especially when the edges have 90° angles.

These measures are based on tested child safety standards and are especially effective with HEMNES furniture.
