Hello everyone, I’m facing the challenge of assembling a Billy shelf unit in a very narrow space with limited room. The width is only about 60 cm (24 inches), but the height is nearly 2.10 m (6 feet 11 inches) and the depth around 30 cm (12 inches). My question is: How can I set up and adapt the Billy shelf here to make the best use of the space without it feeling too cramped? Are there smart tricks for arranging the shelves differently or accessories that can help maximize storage despite the tight dimensions? I would really appreciate concrete tips and experiences!

Use white or light-colored shelving units; it makes the space feel more open. That’s a very good point since my room is rather dark. I also wanted to ask if anyone has experience with relocating the side panels or converting a Billy bookshelf into a kind of corner solution? I’m considering whether it’s possible, using custom-made connectors, to combine two narrow Billy units to create an L-shaped layout that optimizes the use of space.

whether you can combine two narrow Billy shelves using custom-made joints to create an L-shaped space utilization. This can definitely work but requires more skilled craftsmanship. It is important that the construction remains stable, especially if the shelf is built upwards. Metal brackets and strong screw connections are recommended as joining points. This way, the space in the room remains pleasantly open and the slim design is preserved.
I also connected two Billy shelves in an L-shape, but placed them side by side with a small gap to make it easier to disassemble later. Use base plates at the bottom to increase stability. Otherwise, pay attention to weight distribution with regard to the height to minimize the risk of tipping.

Alternatively, you can use slightly matte surfaces, as they reflect light better. Depending on the room’s purpose, combine the shelf with multifunctional elements, such as a fold-down tray, to use the space more flexibly. Not everything needs to be packed in at once; leaving some free space always helps 🙂
