ᐅ How can I protect BILLY shelves from scratches caused by pets?

NonguHello everyone, I have several Billy shelves from IKEA at home that I really appreciate – practical, simple, and affordable. However, there is an issue with my cat occasionally scratching the shelves, which unfortunately causes light to moderate scratches on the surface.
I am particularly interested in methods or materials to best protect Billy shelves from pet scratches. Are there any proven protective films, special varnishes, or perhaps simple tricks that prevent damage without affecting the appearance?
I am looking for solutions that last in the long term and are suitable for the typical material of Billy shelves (particleboard with melamine coating). Thanks for any tips and experiences!

What works best for me are self-adhesive transparent protective films for furniture – you can find them at hardware stores or online. They’re quite durable, and when they start to look worn, you just replace them.
And very important: always provide alternatives for scratching, like a scratching post in front of the shelf; otherwise, the cats will just find something else. That way, you stay relaxed and your BILLY looks new much longer 😉.

That’s brilliant! I protected my BILLY shelves with a thin acrylic glass panel that I had custom-made.
It’s a small investment but very effective because the panel takes all the wear and tear, keeping the surface undamaged. Plus, it even looks stylish!
Maybe an idea for everyone who has some DIY skills and a good hardware store nearby! :-)

One more tip from me: add soft silicone corner protectors to the shelves to prevent cats from getting hurt and from scratching constantly! I tried it, works great! 🙂
