Hello everyone,

Recently, I assembled a Kallax shelf, but unfortunately, I made some mistakes and didn’t join some parts correctly. This raises the question: Which parts of the Kallax shelf can be taken apart again without much trouble after an incorrect assembly, and then reassembled easily?

I assume some connection points are sturdy and designed for reuse, while others might get damaged or lose stability when taken apart.

Does anyone have experience with which elements to watch out for? I’m particularly concerned about the joints between the side panels and the shelves or the back panel, as I’m unsure whether the dowel holes or screw holes might get damaged.

I would really appreciate any tips or personal experiences on this topic, including any tricks for properly and securely reassembling the shelf. Thanks in advance!

I know this well; it has happened to me too! Generally, I would say the side panels and shelves usually don’t cause major problems if you carefully loosen the screws and keep the connecting points intact.

However, you should be a bit cautious with the dowels – once they are pulled out or twisted, they often don’t hold as firmly anymore. It’s best to unscrew the screws slowly and try not to damage the dowels as much as possible.

Sometimes replacing damaged dowels can help – the IKEA dowels are standardized and inexpensive to get. So don’t worry if a few don’t hold anymore; you can replace them and re-drill if needed.

You’ll manage for sure; patience and a delicate touch are the most important! 🙂

Hey Matthis!

I discussed this topic with my Kallax, and it’s really not a big deal.

That’s exactly the point! But in the end, you can usually reattach the bottom panels and side walls without any problem. The important thing is not to strip the screw holes.

My tip: If you have stripped a hole, just add some wood glue, insert a dowel, wait a moment, and then you can put a new screw in there—it holds very firmly!

So, don’t get discouraged! The unit is quite sturdy. 🙂 Good luck!

Facts:

1. The side panels and shelves are connected with wooden dowels and screws. The wooden dowels can lose stability if removed and reinserted repeatedly, especially if they are pulled out or twisted.

2. Screws placed in pre-drilled holes can be reused multiple times, provided the holes are not enlarged or damaged.

3. The back panel is usually attached with small nails or staples designed for one-time use and should be replaced when disassembled.

Tips:
- If dowels are damaged, replacement dowels from any hardware store are affordable and compatible.
- For screw holes that have become stripped, inserting small wood chips with wood glue or drilling a slightly offset new hole is recommended.

Conclusion: The main structure (side panels and shelves) can be reassembled multiple times with care. The back panel and fasteners like nails should be renewed.

That’s correct, you should always fix the back panel with new nails.

Exactly. It’s better to be careful and take it apart step by step.

Otherwise, side panels and shelves can usually be reused. Screw holes usually hold as long as they don’t become enlarged.
