francescog30 Oct 2024 10:07Hello everyone, I bought a KALLAX shelf from IKEA for the children’s room, which I want to use intensively to store a fair amount of books, toys, and some heavier items. My question is: Can a KALLAX shelf for a children’s room withstand these typical loads long-term without stability issues or material fatigue?
In connection with this, it would be helpful to know if there are specific load capacity limits, how these should be assessed in practice, and if you have any practical tips for using the shelf as safely and durably as possible in a children’s room. Thanks in advance for all your insights and experiences!

The load capacity of the KALLAX primarily depends on proper assembly and usage. According to IKEA, the maximum load per shelf is approximately 13 kg (29 lbs). It is important to assemble the unit on a level surface and, if possible, secure it to the wall, especially in children’s rooms for safety reasons.
If the shelf is not overloaded or packed with excessively heavy items, a durable service life can be expected. For heavier loads, it would be advisable to consider special reinforcements or alternative shelving systems.

According to IKEA, the maximum load capacity is about 13 kg per shelf.I agree with this and would add that the KALLAX shelves are made from medium-density fiberboard (MDF) with a laminate surface, which generally provides good stability under normal use. The total load limit for the entire unit is approximately 77 kg, distributed evenly across all shelves.
For a child's room, wall mounting is absolutely necessary to prevent tipping. The shelf is suitable for storing toys, books, and similar everyday items, as long as the weight distribution is taken into account.
To answer the question in more detail: The KALLAX is made of CNC-milled MDF boards with a melamine resin coating, which makes the surface durable and scratch-resistant. However, the standard shelves are only about 15 mm (0.6 inches) thick and are not continuously load-bearing like solid wood.
A load of more than 13 kg (29 lbs) per compartment should be avoided to prevent sagging. For a child's room, this is relatively uncritical if you store regular books, toys, and boxes.
It is important to secure the unit to the wall using the included anchors or suitable screws for the type of wall. Additionally, you should check whether high point loads are constantly applied to small areas, as this could cause the material to wear out faster.
Do you have any further information about how the shelf will be used in your case—for example, storing particularly heavy items or using it as a seating surface?

My focus is on books, medium to heavy toy boxes (about 7–10 kg (15–22 lbs) per box), and a few decorative items. Using it as seating is out of the question since the shelf is firmly attached to the wall.
Wall mounting is planned but has not yet been implemented. I will take care of that soon. The boxes are not packed excessively full, but I want to be sure that the pull-out and load-bearing capacity will hold up for the next few years. Are there any risks you think I should specifically watch out for?
