Good morning everyone,
I have a somewhat specific question regarding the Ikea PLATSA furniture. I am planning to redesign my bathroom and have been considering the PLATSA range because it is said to be modular and flexible. However, so far I have not found any clear information about whether there are actually specific PLATSA elements designed explicitly for bathroom use.
I would therefore be interested to know if anyone has experience with PLATSA furniture in the humid environment of a bathroom, or if Ikea offers any models or variations in this series specifically intended for bathroom settings.
What is especially important to me is whether the modules have special coatings, water-resistant materials, or other features that are useful or necessary in a bathroom.
So, are there any special Ikea PLATSA furniture items for bathrooms, or are “regular” PLATSA units suitable for bathroom use?
Looking forward to all the information and experiences.

What is the humidity level in your bathroom? Will you place the furniture close to the shower or bathtub?Thank you for your explanation, Lance.
My bathroom is quite small, without windows, but it has an exhaust ventilation system. The humidity level is theoretically in the medium range. The planned PLATSA units will mainly be installed under the sink, so not directly next to the shower, which is located in a separate niche.
Nevertheless, I am interested in how high the risk is with this positioning. Also, whether I can make the furniture relatively safe with impregnation or similar treatments.
What I want to avoid are swollen edges or mold problems after some use. Are there any concrete experiences in the forum with PLATSA in such a location?

The planned PLATSA units are mainly intended to be installed under the sink, so not in the immediate vicinity of the showerThat sounds like a reasonable placement. Although there is some moisture exposure under the sink, it is less intense than in the shower area.
If you also properly seal the edges and ensure regular ventilation, you can use PLATSA there with some caution.
Additionally, a waterproof back panel is recommended in case water seeps from the wall.
I am not aware of any official Ikea “bathroom” PLATSA units, but your approach is definitely practical.

It gets interesting when people use PLATSA with additional waterproof coatings – this could potentially create a new segment of DIY bathroom furniture that Ikea does not currently provide.

Are there any concrete experiences in the forum with PLATSA in this kind of situation? From my observations here: Some users report that after two to three years, standard PLATSA furniture in the bathroom may develop slight swelling on the bottom edges. However, this strongly depends on maintenance, indoor climate, and installation.
I recommend the following measures:
- Seal the furniture with good moisture protection before assembly
- Apply multiple coats of varnish or seal edges with clear silicone
- Ventilate regularly, using a dehumidifier if possible
- Avoid placing cabinets directly on the floor; use legs or a small elevation
If you keep these points in mind, PLATSA can be considered for the bathroom, especially if you don’t want professional bathroom furniture from Ikea.
