antefraHello everyone, I would like to ask a specific question regarding the optimal care of IKEA Hemnes furniture in households with pets. Since the Hemnes series is mostly made of solid pine wood and often comes in white or with a clear lacquer finish, I find it a bit tricky—especially with cats or dogs that like to scratch furniture or leave hair—to determine the best way to protect and maintain the wood.
I am primarily interested in which care methods or products you use to minimize scratches, prevent stains from pet hair or moisture, and at the same time preserve the typical light appearance of the Hemnes series. It would also be interesting to learn about alternative protection tips, such as special felt pads, natural oils, or cleaning processes that have proven effective in practice.
How do you specifically handle this with your IKEA Hemnes furniture when pets use or interact with it intensively? I look forward to your experiences, including any advice on mistakes to avoid.

warrenka5723 Oct 2024 09:21Hello antefra, I can fully understand how stressful it can be when our beloved pets constantly come into conflict with our furniture.
What I do with my Hemnes furniture is avoid harsh cleaning agents and instead use a slightly damp microfiber cloth, ideally with a mild wood floor soap product.
To protect against scratches, I have attached felt pads to the pets’ feet and placed a scratching post nearby – this makes the furniture less appealing. I have also considered protecting the exposed surfaces with furniture wax, but I notice that the natural look is slightly affected.
I hope this helps you a bit. Sharing experiences here can encourage all of us to be more relaxed about minor damages.

Hey antefra, your topic really made me smile – furniture versus pets, a classic! 😄
I can only recommend regularly dusting Hemnes furniture, as that drastically reduces lint and hair. For occasional cleaning, I use a mix of water with a splash of mild dish soap; it doesn’t soak in and removes small stains.
To protect against scratches, I sometimes apply a thin layer of furniture oil with a sponge. This nourishes the wood and makes it more resistant. Of course, you have to be careful not to make it too shiny – that way the charming, natural character stays intact.
I agree, wax is a delicate balance between protection and aesthetics. 😏 But hey, sometimes a few scratches are just the stories our pets leave behind. 😉

I’ve also thought about protecting the bare surfaces with furniture wax but noticed that the natural look suffers a bit.

For the care of Hemnes furniture made of pine wood in households with pets, mechanical protection measures and proper cleaning are the most important factors.
- Avoid harsh cleaners: It is recommended to use mild cleaning agents such as wood soap or gentle dishwashing detergent.
- Protection against scratches: Felt pads or protective mats placed where pets often sit or scratch significantly reduce wear.
- Regular cleaning: Removing dust and pet hair prevents abrasion on the surface.
- Surface protection: Natural oils are suitable because they penetrate the wood without noticeably discoloring the clean white appearance, unlike waxes or varnishes that create layers and alter the texture.
Incorrect use of oils can cause unwanted dark spots, so it is always important to test on an inconspicuous area first.
In summary, prevention through mechanical protection and careful cleaning are the best ways to preserve Hemnes furniture in homes with pets.

I would like to add a brief care tutorial specifically tailored to the needs of Hemnes solid wood furniture in homes with pets.
1. Routine cleaning:
- Use a dry microfiber cloth to remove dust and pet hair.
- For stubborn dirt, use a damp cloth with a small amount of mild soap, then wipe dry immediately.
2. Protection against scratches:
- Attach felt or rubber pads to furniture edges and feet.
- Prevent pets from scratching directly on the surface by providing alternatives like scratching posts.
3. Wood care (about every 6 months):
- Use colorless, natural linseed oil products that penetrate deeply and protect the grain.
- Test on a hidden area before the first treatment to rule out discoloration.
- Apply the oil thinly and sparingly – over-oiling can leave sticky residues.
4. Mistakes to avoid:
- Do not use aggressive cleaning agents or sharp tools.
- Avoid waxes that seal the wood and can peel off with regular use.
This method preserves appearance and functionality, even if pets spend a lot of time near the furniture.
