Hello everyone,

I have been considering using my Kallax shelf as a sideboard for some time now, since I don’t find the traditional sideboard design very suitable for my apartment at the moment. My main question is: Has anyone had experience with converting a Kallax into a sideboard? I am particularly interested in aspects such as stability, the surface area for placing decorations or electronics (e.g., speakers), as well as possible organizational solutions for existing electronics or dishware. I have the standard 4x4 model with the usual dimensions.

I am also curious if there are specific tips or additions that make the Kallax truly practical as a sideboard in everyday use, or if it generally remains more of a compromise. Many thanks in advance for your input!

Interesting question, MANMARIUS. However, I would question the basic suitability of the Kallax shelf. It was primarily designed as a shelving system and, due to its height and depth, might not be ideal as a sideboard.

Can you specify what kind of equipment or decorations you want to place on it? That greatly affects the stability requirements.

From my perspective, the load-bearing capacity of the Kallax is particularly important. The maximum support surface is 77 cm (30 inches) wide with a depth of 39 cm (15 inches), which is rather compact for sideboards.

Due to the material, the individual compartments can hold up to approximately 13 kg (29 lbs), but the overall structure should have no issues with moderate decoration or light electronic equipment (e.g., speakers or small hi-fi components).

For larger electronics, reinforcing the base or adding extra feet is advisable.

I use my Kallax as a sideboard with open boxes inside. It is sturdy enough, and the surface holds up well. It works for electronic equipment as long as it is not too heavy.

I equipped the Kallax with furniture legs to improve stability. Decoration and electronics are no problem. However, cable management needs to be done manually.

Cool topic! A Kallax unit makes a great sideboard when you customize it properly. I added some wooden boards on top – it looks very elegant and is sturdier. Add matching storage boxes, and you have a sideboard alternative that doesn’t look like the typical Ikea shelf.

Exactly, keep everything in moderation and refine the whole setup with style :-) .
