Hello everyone,

I have several Billy shelves from IKEA at home and want to clean them regularly without damaging the surface. I am particularly interested in how to properly care for the sensitive surface, which cleaning agents are suitable, and the best way to avoid scratches, peeling of the laminate, or dull spots.

Could you please share any tips on methods that have proven effective and whether there are specific products or home remedies that should be avoided?

Thank you in advance!

A few technical details about the Billy surface: The shelves are made of melamine-coated particleboard. The film coating is hard but loses its protective function if handled incorrectly.

Please note the following points:

- Avoid moisture in the joints, as this can cause the board to swell.
- Cleaning solutions should be pH-neutral to protect the film from chemical degradation.
- Cleaning should be done with soft cloths; microfiber cloths work very well.

To remove oil stains, a mildly diluted dish soap solution is recommended. For dust, dry wiping is sufficient, as otherwise unnecessary abrasion may occur.

How long have your shelves been in use? Have you noticed any damage to the surface?

It should be noted that the BILLY shelves do not have a painted surface but a foil covering. This means that care products intended for furniture or automotive use are often unsuitable.

I recommend:
- Regularly removing dust with a dry cloth
- Wiping with a damp cloth using only lukewarm soapy water
- Avoiding harsh or alcohol-based cleaners to prevent damage to the foil
- Gently treating stains with a soft sponge

To optimize durability, shelves should not be exposed to high humidity levels over extended periods, as this can cause changes in the material’s structure over time.

I agree, but would like to add: The "soapy water" should be used very sparingly – I recommend no more than 1-2 drops of dishwashing detergent per 1 liter (1 quart) of water to avoid residues that can appear dull and sticky.

That’s correct, especially with alcohol-based cleaners caution is necessary. Vinegar-based cleaners are also not recommended as they can damage the protective layer.

I would be interested to know if Danyal9 is dealing with any specific stain issues? Sometimes stains arise from certain pigments or adhesive residues – in those cases, special advice is needed. Are there such cases?

Thank you in advance for the detailed responses.

My shelves are located in the living room, with moderate humidity levels, and are mainly used for books and decorations. The surface is usually dusty or occasionally shows fingerprints.

I don’t have stains from paint or glue, but sometimes there are slight grease marks from hands or food (there is a BILLY shelf quite close to the dining table).

I will start by trying a mild dish soap solution and test using a microfiber cloth.

Are there any recommendations on how often the shelves should ideally be cleaned to protect the surface while preventing dust buildup?

A good rule of thumb is:
- Remove dust dry on a weekly basis
- Wipe damp approximately every 4–6 weeks or as needed

More frequent wet cleaning is not necessary and puts unnecessary strain on the surface. This helps avoid wear caused by mechanical abrasion and water.

Great topic! 🙂 I really love my BILLY shelves and take great care of them.

Here’s what I do:
- Dust daily (or every other day) with a dry cloth – this is very important to prevent unpleasant particles from accumulating!
- Clean with a damp cloth about every 3 weeks using warm water and a few drops of dish soap
- For hands that are sometimes a bit oily, I occasionally use a slightly damp cloth with a splash of lemon (CAUTION: very gentle use only, never pure lemon juice!), which refreshes the surface and removes grease really well.

Important: Never use a sponge or abrasive cleaners!

Have you had any bad experiences with home remedies?
