ᐅ My Kallax shelves are developing warping or ripples on the sides after carpet cleaning.

ToraboHello everyone, I have a Kallax shelf from Ikea at home that I really like using – it’s sturdy and practical. However, after the last carpet cleaning, I noticed unsightly warping on the outer sides of the Kallax shelf. These waves mainly appear where the particleboard or chipboard is used. My question is: Is this a common issue with Kallax shelves after exposure to moisture? Could it be that the surface coating is not sufficiently water-resistant? And are there any tips on how to prevent or at least minimize such warping when working in a room with damp cleaning? I’m looking forward to your opinions and experiences on this.
Hey Torabo! I’m familiar with the warping issue – it often happens when the Kallax gets wet, mainly because the material isn’t water-resistant. The particleboard swells as moisture penetrates the wood. It’s not a disaster though, usually it’s only visible on the edges. A quick tip: always try to place mats or coasters underneath and ventilate quickly after cleaning! 🙂 Maybe a sealant could help if you want to apply something – that often provides good protection against water.
Kallax shelves are made of particleboard with a decorative foil, which is not water-resistant. The warping on the sides occurs because the particleboard absorbs moisture and expands. Preventively, it helps to treat the shelf sides with water-repellent varnish or special wood sealants. Repairing such damage afterwards is difficult, as the material may be permanently deformed. For the future, I recommend keeping the room well-ventilated and avoiding direct splash water.

This unfortunately happens quite often when the Kallax gets some water; primarily, the material is simply not waterproof. That really sounds frustrating, especially when you rely on the furniture so much. I can totally understand your irritation when the otherwise so practical Kallax gets damaged just from cleaning. It has happened to me as well that moisture left marks like that, and then I tried to minimize them using fine sandpaper and wood oil. It wasn’t perfect, but it helped to smooth the surface. Maybe that’s worth a try?

What confuses me is that the shelf parts are coated on the outside with a kind of foil, which I had assumed to be quite durable. Now I’m wondering if the cleaning solution or moisture could still cause damage somehow. Does anyone here maybe use a specific cleaning method that can be applied to carpets without damaging the shelf? So, not wiping directly with a very wet cloth, but perhaps only steam cleaning?Similar topics
