Hello everyone,

I recently noticed some unpleasant scratches on the surfaces of my IKEA Besta unit. Since these are rather delicate MDF panels with a foil-coated surface, I’m a bit concerned that traditional wood scratch removal methods might not work or could even damage the surface further.

Therefore, my question to you is: What proven methods are there to remove scratches from IKEA Besta surfaces without harming the foil coating? Are there any special home remedies or suitable products for these relatively smooth, melamine-type finishes? What is the best approach to visibly minimize or completely eliminate scratches without being too aggressive?

I look forward to your experiences and tips!

Hello,

often the best results come from using furniture polish or a special scratch remover available at hardware stores. Simply apply a small amount and gently rub it in with a soft cloth – don’t rub harshly, but polish. For deeper scratches, it may be necessary to apply the product several times.

Be careful with abrasive products: the surface of the laminate is sensitive, so avoid using strong abrasive materials.

This is a good and at the same time complex question. IKEA Besta surfaces are generally made of melamine-coated MDF panels, which are durable but due to the layering are not resistant to all types of wear. When dealing with scratches, it largely depends on how deep they are.

The following method has been proven several times:
- First, gently clean the surface with a damp, soft cloth to ensure no dirt particles further scratch the surface.
- Small, superficial scratches can often be treated with a special care product designed for melamine-coated furniture. These products contain mild abrasives that gently polish without breaking through the laminate coating.
- For application, the product is generously applied with a microfiber cloth and carefully rubbed in circular motions. The key is to apply it several times gently in succession rather than using too much pressure.
- Deeper scratches are more difficult to fix. In these cases, a special furniture touch-up pen in the matching color can help to visually conceal them.

I also recommend testing any treatment on an inconspicuous area first to avoid any surprises.

My question to you: Are the scratches rather superficial or have they clearly penetrated the material? This could help narrow down the choice of method.

Very nicely explained! I always think of it as a kind of gentle massage for the piece of furniture – after all, you don’t want to “scratch” it, but rather care for it lovingly. 😅

What has worked really well for me is a simple home remedy: a little sunflower oil or olive oil. Just a small amount on a cloth, carefully applied to the scratches, then left to absorb briefly before polishing. Sometimes this works wonders on minor scratches because the oil slightly “buffs up” the surface and helps to conceal the edges.

Of course, with deeper dents, this is mostly just a cosmetic trick. In those cases, I would also use the care products that Nathanaelk mentioned.

Just be careful not to use too much oil, or it will quickly look greasy. It’s always better to work in small sections!
