Hello everyone,
I have had an Ikea Pax system at home for a while, but now I want to improve the quality of the doors because I noticed they are quite prone to damage or warping due to moisture.
That’s why I’m asking the community: How can the quality of Ikea Pax doors be improved?
I’m not just referring to practical tips for maintenance or installation, but especially concrete solutions such as better materials, reinforcements, alternative fittings, or other improvements. What experiences or recommendations do you have to make the doors more durable and stable?
Thanks in advance for your tips and opinions!

How can the quality of Ikea Pax doors be improved?I’m glad you asked such a specific question because the doors are often a weak point in the Pax system.
Basically, I recommend looking at this from several angles:
- Material choice: The standard doors are often made of particleboard with a veneer that is sensitive to moisture. Switching to plywood or MDF with a melamine resin coating could be better, as these materials are more durable and less prone to water damage.
- Reinforcement: Internal support strips made of aluminum or hardwood can help prevent doors from warping or bending.
- Hardware: Ikea’s standard hinges are affordable, but upgrading to larger, higher-quality hinges (for example, Blum) can provide better stability and smoother operation.
- Surface finish: Adding an extra protective layer, such as a thin acrylic or polyurethane coating, would make the surface more resistant to scratches and moisture.
Proper installation is also important:
- Doors should always be mounted perfectly square.
- Hinges need to be adjustable and checked regularly.
I’m curious about your specific usage scenario. Are the doors installed in humid rooms? How frequently are they used? These factors affect the best solution.

What helped me was regularly oiling the fittings and checking for any stress or tension buildup. Still, my ideal solution would be a more durable door that is less sensitive to moisture.
I appreciate the suggestions about better materials or additional protective layers. Maybe Ikea should improve this on their own. But until then, the best approach is probably to maintain the doors well and possibly reinforce them as a precaution.

How can the quality of Ikea Pax doors be improved? From a technical perspective, I recommend adding seals to the door edges to reduce moisture absorption, especially if the doors are located near bathrooms or kitchens.
Additionally, using high-quality edge protectors made of PVC or aluminum can provide greater stability.
When it comes to hardware, investing in branded, fully adjustable fittings is worthwhile to ensure the doors remain precisely aligned over time.
It is also important that the doors are mounted on a stable substructure. If the cabinet frame is unstable or not properly leveled, it will negatively affect the doors.

Change the material (e.g., MDF instead of particleboard), use better hinges, otherwise rather minor repairs and maintenance. In my opinion, Ikea’s whole approach with Pax doors often seems focused on producing as cheaply as possible and serving the highest number of customers in the short term. The quality hardly considers long-term durability.
If you want more, you shouldn’t go for Ikea but rather look for higher-quality solutions outside the mainstream.
Of course, you can’t expect everything at that price. Still, it frustrates me how little innovation goes into door quality.
A reinforced, modular system with replaceable door panels and customization options would make more sense than the current setup, which is actually more prone to repairs than durable.
