Hello everyone, I hope you can help me. I have several BILLY shelves from IKEA and would like to make them child-safe and stable to prevent them from tipping over or becoming hazardous when used by children. Specifically, I am wondering which measures are effective to increase the stability of BILLY shelves for kids. What types of fastenings, additional safety features, or modifications are recommended to prevent tipping? I am also interested in any experience with special depth extensions, extra reinforcements, or wall anchors. It is important to me to know which methods can be implemented easily at home without professional tools or structural alterations – so if you have practical tips beyond the usual wall mounting, I would be very grateful!

The most important thing is to always screw the shelf to the wall, as this reliably prevents it from tipping over. Additionally, you should avoid building the shelves too high. Always place heavy items at the bottom and lighter ones on top.

To improve the stability of BILLY shelves for use by children, I recommend the following measures:

1. Securing the shelf to the wall with the included safety kit is mandatory, as the shelf can otherwise easily tip over.

2. Additional reinforcement can be achieved by attaching angle brackets to the back and corners, which increases rigidity.

3. Optimize weight distribution: place heavy items on the lower half to lower the center of gravity.

4. For the floor: anti-slip mats or rubber feet reduce slipping on smooth surfaces.

5. In tiled or sensitive rooms, it is also advisable to glue carpet underlays in place.

6. For stability without structural modifications: bonding the shelves with wood glue provides better adhesion.

If the shelf is used especially by younger children, it should also be checked whether the doors are locked or removed to prevent injuries.

Absolutely, the kit is essential; otherwise, it becomes a playground hazard.

I also installed small metal corner brackets at our place, which adds extra stability to the shelf when the little ones are testing their balance again 🙂

And hey, something really helpful: don’t fully load the shelves all the time. Instead, rearrange them more often to keep everything flexible, so you’ll notice immediately if something gets unstable.

If you like, you can also use fabric bins or baskets, which are lighter than books and make the whole setup more stable – plus, they even look cool!
