Hello everyone, I am currently considering how to equip my Ikea Platsa furniture with lift handles because I don’t find the usual handles very appealing visually and would also like to improve the usability. Are there practical solutions or even specific lift handle models that can be mounted directly or with minor modifications on PLATSA cabinet doors and drawers? Any advice on mounting techniques, possible drilling requirements, or alternatives without permanent installation would be greatly appreciated. Since the PLATSA units are mostly made of wood panels with relatively smooth fronts, I am especially interested in tips on how to install the lift handles in a durable and stable way without compromising the appearance or functionality. Thanks for your experiences and recommendations!
Hello YVO42, I’m happy to help with a brief guide on how to install handles on PLATSA furniture. 1. Consider which type of handle you want – for example, curved or straight models. 2. Measure the exact distance for the screw holes on the door or drawer. 3. If there are no holes yet, mark the positions with a pencil. 4. Carefully drill through the front panel with an appropriate drill bit – for PLATSA, to avoid splintering, it’s best to drill from the back side. 5. Attach the handles using the included screws and tighten them evenly. 6. Finally, check that the handles are secure and that the doors open properly. Tip: Since PLATSA has surfaces made of melamine-coated particleboard, handles with flat contact areas are better to avoid damage. If you want to avoid drilling, you could try clamp-on or magnetic handles – but these may not work well with all models.
YVO42, I know how frustrating it can be to find the right handles that actually fit well and look good. I also spent a long time searching and wasn’t sure if drilling would damage my furniture. Sometimes it helps to practice first on an inexpensive door to get a feel for the correct drilling spot and how secure it will be. Don’t hesitate! The lift handles really make a difference in the end. Good luck – and feel free to reach out if you have any more questions.
In addition to what has already been mentioned, here is a brief guide:
- Choose handles that are fastened with 3-4 screws for better stability.
- Carefully mark measurements using a tape measure and a square.
- Always drill straight to prevent splintering.
- When installing, use small washers if the screw holes might be prone to tearing out.
- To protect the surface from abrasion, you can attach felt or rubber strips to the underside of the handles. This way, you preserve the material while still having a practical handle.
I have been using this method for years with my PLATSA cabinets.
