Hello everyone, I am currently planning to install Ikea Metod wall cabinets in my kitchen on rigid walls, which mainly consist of concrete with a rough surface. I am interested in which specific steps during installation and secure fixing in such challenging wall conditions are truly effective. In particular, which types of wall plugs and mounting methods are recommended, how to best distribute the loads, and what to consider when preparing the wall surface. Are there any special techniques or tools that simplify the process or significantly increase holding strength? I would also appreciate advice on common pitfalls that are often overlooked with rigid walls. Thank you in advance for your experience and tips!

Hello Amaliaso62, thank you for the detailed question, it makes it easier to assist. When dealing with rigid concrete walls, selecting the right anchors is crucial. I recommend heavy-duty anchors such as expansion anchors or metal anchors, which have a high load capacity. First, you should measure carefully to align the wall cabinets precisely, ideally using a spirit level and a laser. Drill the holes with a masonry drill bit that matches the anchors, and drill deep enough so the anchor sits fully and does not become loose. It is also important to clean the wall of dust and loose particles before installation to ensure the anchors hold securely. During installation, you can additionally attach a mounting rail, which you fasten securely first and then hang the cabinets on – this helps distribute the weight more evenly. Your wall should also be checked for any electrical cables or pipes in the drilling area. If you have any further questions, just let me know.

- Use heavy-duty anchors
- Drill holes with a masonry bit
- Clean anchor holes before inserting
- Use a mounting strip for load distribution
- Check alignment with a spirit level

Hello Amaliaso62, to fully answer your question, I need to address the details of the wall material. Rigid concrete walls have a very dense and solid structure, which is generally advantageous for load-bearing, but the drilling and fastening process requires precision. Here is a step-by-step approach:

- First, you should accurately determine the load capacity of your Ikea Metod wall cabinet (usually over 30 kg (66 lbs) per cabinet is assumed, 50 kg (110 lbs) for several shelves) and compare this with the anchor capacities.
- Preferably use heavy-duty metal anchors (e.g., nail anchors or bolt anchors) instead of plastic anchors, as these provide better grip in hard concrete walls and minimize the risk of pull-out.
- Drilling should be done with a high-quality SDS-Plus rotary hammer and an appropriate concrete drill bit in the recommended diameter. The drill depth should be at least 60 mm (2.4 inches) to ensure sufficient hold.
- After drilling, it is essential to remove the drill dust with compressed air or a vacuum; otherwise, the anchor will not grip properly and the load will not be supported.
- To facilitate mounting and optimally distribute forces, a mounting rail made of sturdy wood or metal can be fixed to the wall, to which the cabinets can then be attached using the hanging system.
- Before fixing everything in place, exact left and right alignment is important – a laser level greatly aids precise positioning.
- Also consider the location of electrical cables and water pipes; a cable detector with depth measurement is suitable for this.

One question for you: How many wall cabinets do you plan to mount, and what total weight should they carry? This would help to tailor the choice of fasteners even more precisely.

Hello Nakar33, good question! I’m planning three Metod wall cabinets, each about 60 cm (24 inches) wide and approximately 40 cm (16 inches) high. The cabinets should be able to support a total of around 120 kg (265 lbs) including contents—so roughly 40 kg (88 lbs) per cabinet as a maximum. Since I want to store heavy kitchen utensils as well, they should be mounted as securely as possible. Your recommendation for metal anchors sounds suitable, but I’d especially appreciate detailed advice on installation, specifically regarding load distribution and drilling techniques. Thanks!

Hello Amaliaso62, with your planned weight of about 40 kg (88 lbs) per cabinet, it is very important to pay close attention to installation accuracy and the correct fixings. Heavy-duty metal anchors, ideally high-load bolt anchors, are best suited here. Use an SDS hammer drill with a concrete drill bit of at least 10 mm (0.4 inches) in diameter to ensure sufficient safety.

Distribute the load over at least two fixing points per cabinet to minimize stress on the wall. If possible, also attach a sturdy mounting rail made of wood or steel horizontally to support the wall cabinets. This rail provides even load distribution and significantly simplifies the installation.

Make sure the wall is free from any loose areas. Old paint or dust should be carefully removed beforehand, ideally by sanding and then wiping down. This will prevent the anchors from slipping. Important: Allow the anchors to slightly “shrink” after insertion before placing the weight to securely anchor the load.
