ᐅ Is it possible to expand the Ikea Pax system modularly without much effort?

peerjaHello everyone, I am currently in the process of putting together an Ikea Pax wardrobe and am wondering if it can be expanded modularly without much effort. My specific question is: Can you extend the Ikea Pax system modularly, meaning can you add individual components to an already assembled wardrobe or modify it without having to do extensive disassembly or major alterations?
I would appreciate your insights or experiences, as I want to keep as much flexibility as possible during the planning phase without having to take everything apart later. Thank you in advance!

Basically, the Ikea Pax system is designed to be modular and can indeed be expanded. However, there are a few points to keep in mind:
- The frame and carcass are assembled separately with screws, which means you can place additional "frames" next to or on top of the existing one.
- If you already have a fixed, screwed-together carcass, it is often necessary to partially dismantle it to connect new modules. There is no purely plug-on solution without disassembly.
- Doors and interior fittings can usually be added or swapped separately.
My advice: plan the expansion when purchasing, for example by including extra side panels and reinforcements to stabilize the frame. This way, you can more easily add modules later without having to take apart the entire wardrobe.
I hope this helps. If you want, I can explain in more detail how the joints and screws work.

Especially when the cabinets have been installed for a while and are well fitted, taking them apart can be stressful.
I think it’s important to be emotionally prepared for this as well: sometimes such an extension requires a lot of time and patience and can’t be done “just like that.” But the flexibility the system offers is still worth a try.
Fortunately, Ikea’s spare parts supply is quite good if you need screws or connectors separately.
I’m keeping my fingers crossed that everything goes smoothly for you!

I built my Pax a few years ago and later added an extension because I needed more storage space. The great thing is that you can simply place the modules side by side, and Ikea even offers connector pieces that make the whole setup secure and stable. Of course, if the initial wardrobe is already firmly installed, you might need to loosen the back panel and remove a few screws, but it’s nothing complicated.
Just follow the instructions carefully and make sure to identify the connection points beforehand.
Good luck with your project—and enjoy the expansion!

I would like to go into more detail about the technical procedure here, since "without much effort" can vary greatly depending on the situation.
- The individual Pax modules consist of a frame that is stabilized with back panels. If your cabinet is firmly screwed together and the back panel is nailed or stapled, you will need to remove it first, for example using a putty knife or crowbar, in order to connect the new module.
- When expanding, entire frames are usually combined side by side. The connections run along the vertical sides and are secured with special connector screws that fit through pre-drilled holes.
- Attaching connectors to already assembled cabinets is possible if you are familiar with tools, but it requires some craftsmanship skills.
One last question for you: How long has your Pax been in place? Was it attached to the wall? Because that can also increase the complexity.
In any case, I recommend thoroughly studying the instructions beforehand and, if necessary, obtaining a replacement connector set.
I’m happy to help with further technical details.
