Hello everyone,

I own several Malm furniture pieces from Ikea that have started to wobble or show minor damage in some areas over time. Since I’m not a big fan of hiring professional furniture repair for every small issue, I would like to try fixing my Malm furniture myself as much as possible.

My specific question is: How can I repair Malm furniture on my own when, for example, drawer slides are sticking, screws have become loose, or the wood is chipped on some edges? What tools and materials would be recommended for these repairs, and are there any particular construction features of the Malm series I should be aware of?

I would really appreciate any experiences, tips, or advice on mistakes to avoid!

Hello,

first of all, it’s great that you want to take this on yourself! I’m quite familiar with the Malm series and can say that with a bit of patience, it usually works out well. The most important thing to start with is having the right tools: a good-quality Phillips screwdriver (not too cheap), a set of hex keys (allen wrenches), and some wood glue are your basic equipment.

If your drawer slides are sticking, first check if dirt or foreign objects are caught in the track. You can often clean these with a slightly damp cloth and then apply a special silicone spray— I wouldn’t recommend using regular lubricating oil because it tends to attract dust.

For stripped screws, you can try filling the screw hole with wood glue and some wood shavings (from another piece of furniture or a scrap wood piece), let it dry, and then reinsert the screw.

You can repair damaged wood edges with wood filler and then treat them with sandpaper and matching paint or varnish to blend the color.

It’s best to proceed slowly and step-by-step. Although Malm furniture is not as solidly made as solid wood pieces, it’s not complicated. If you have more specific details about your problem, just write!

Hello,

I am happy to provide you with a structured guide for repairing Malm furniture:

1. Clean and lubricate drawer slides:
- Remove the rail briefly, if possible, and clean it with a brush and cloth
- Apply a small amount of non-sticky silicone spray

2. Stabilize screw connections:
- Fill worn-out holes with wooden dowels or toothpicks plus wood glue
- Let dry, then sand off any excess material

3. Repair scratched wood surfaces:
- Use wood filler in a matching color
- After drying, sand lightly
- Apply clear varnish or furniture oil for protection

4. Check assembly:
- Ensure all fasteners (dowels, screws) are properly seated

Please note: Avoid using strong solvents (e.g., acetone) on the filler to prevent further surface damage.

Summary: Even beginners can fix minor issues with steady hands; avoid using force and work gradually in small steps.

Drawer catches usually occur due to dirty sliding rails. Clean them and use silicone spray. Loose screws? Add wood glue mixed with wood shavings, and that’s it. Wood scratches: use wood filler or colored pencil. No professional needed.

I can easily understand how frustrating it can be to have furniture problems that just annoy you, but you don’t want to call a professional right away. 🙂

I once had a similar issue with my Malm dresser – the drawer kept sticking, and one corner was scratched. I ordered a small repair kit from an online store: wood filler, sandpaper, furniture wax. After a bit of practice, the corner looked almost like new, and since then the drawer has been much easier to open.

So don’t worry, with small repairs you can really gain confidence! If you have any questions, I’m happy to share my experience.

It is important to consider the construction of Malm furniture when repairing it: they are often made of veneered particleboard with metal fittings.

For loose screws, the most reliable method is using wood glue and wooden toothpicks, as this usually increases the load-bearing capacity of the drilled hole.

Drawer slides should never be treated with oily lubricants, as this attracts dirt over time and impairs functionality. The use of dry lubricants, such as silicone spray, is ideal in this case.

When repairing scuffs, avoid applying filler too thickly, as this can prevent the furniture parts from fitting together precisely. The fine texture and color should be matched as closely as possible using suitable furniture markers or stains.
