Hello everyone, I am currently looking into how to best optimize Ikea Hemnes furniture for small spaces. This furniture series is well known for its classic design and sturdy construction, but in small apartments, storage is limited and the space can quickly feel cluttered. I am especially interested in any modifications or modular solutions you have used to make Hemnes furniture more space-saving or multifunctional. Are there any proven tips for combining pieces or adding supplementary furniture to make the most of the available space? Perhaps experiences with converting or customizing the furniture to increase its flexibility? Thanks in advance for your ideas!

Hello nonrene46, for small spaces the Hemnes topic can be simplified with the following approaches:

- Multifunctional furniture: beds with built-in drawers or shelves that can be combined.
- Limiting to essential furniture pieces to ensure clear pathways and access to natural light.
- Custom adjustments can be made using cut or offset parts, for example to fit furniture precisely into niches.
- Use hook rails on the sides of furniture for small items.

If you are skilled with DIY, rearranging shelves or adding casters can help make the furniture more flexible.

This is an important point because the flexibility provided by casters is often underestimated. For example, a HEMNES chest of drawers can serve as a mobile storage unit that is easy to move around. This is much more space-efficient in small rooms compared to fixed furniture.

HEMNES is suitable for small spaces because the furniture is relatively narrow. I mainly use "wall shelves" to keep floor space clear. That is what matters.

Small shelves on the wall above the cabinet provide extra storage space without making the area feel cluttered.

I find that interesting, thanks. I’m also curious about how you handle the appearance when combining different pieces from the HEMNES series, for example. Personally, I really like the classic white, but in small rooms, it can quickly feel sterile. Do you have experience with custom paint finishes or using color accents that aren’t too dominant but still add some warmth and character? Also, I’d be interested to know how you deal with visible edges or exposed screws during modifications, so nothing looks cheap or makeshift.

Definitely! A light cream or pastel shade makes the HEMNES furniture feel really cozy without being too bold. The best part is, you can easily combine this with new handles and attractive decorative elements. This way, the room becomes lively without feeling cluttered. It not only looks great but also lets you fully express your style. Just have the courage to make a small change!
