Hello everyone, recently I have installed several Ikea Metod kitchen doors and noticed that adjusting them often presents some challenges. My question to the community is: based on your experience, which assembly steps are most important to properly align the doors afterwards and achieve a neat overall appearance? I am especially looking for advice on the order of work steps, fine-tuning options for the hinges, and whether there are specific tools you would recommend. I am interested both in general procedures as well as details like avoiding gaps or uneven door heights. Thanks in advance for your tips and suggestions!

First, always attach the hinges to the cabinet frame without the door. Then hang the door and hold it loosely before starting the fine adjustment.
To adjust the front edge, slightly loosen the screws on the hinge and then move it up/down or sideways.
If the door sticks, first check if there is any part of the frame obstructing the cabinet.
Tools: a clean screwdriver and a spirit level are helpful.

I would like to explain the individual assembly steps in more detail, especially to provide a clear guide for those who do not regularly assemble furniture.

- Step 1: Attach the hinges to the cabinet body without the doors. This creates a stable base and prevents the doors from getting in the way when adjusting later on.
- Step 2: Hang the door and hold it loosely at first. It is important that the door is not fixed too tightly during adjustment so the screws can still be moved.
- Step 3: Adjust the height and lateral position. Typically, the Metod hinges have adjustment screws at the mounting points that allow you to shift the door slightly up, down, or sideways. We start with these to correct any major misalignments.
- Step 4: Depth adjustment. Here, check the spacing from the edge and adjust whether the door sits flush with the cabinet body or has a specific overlap.
- Step 5: Fine-tune the gap measurements. Especially with multiple doors next to each other, I recommend measuring the gaps with a precise ruler or a small feeler gauge. This ensures an even appearance.

A small tip: Take your time and adjust multiple times rather than rushing once. From my experience, it is best to initially tighten the screws only lightly and fully tighten them at the very end. This way, you can still make minor adjustments when installing several doors.

If possible, check the door position again before screwing on the handles, as the handles can interfere slightly during adjustment.

I hope this helps!

Thanks for the great introduction, that fits perfectly! I’ll add a small step-by-step process that always helps me with Metod kitchen doors:

- Preparation: Before installation, check that all hinges are evenly positioned. Hinges that are screwed in unevenly can cause problems during adjustment later.
- Attach the hinges to the cabinet body – do not tighten too much here to maintain adjustment flexibility.
- Carefully hang the door and secure it loosely.
- Then loosen the screws for the height adjustment on the hinges, allowing you to move the door up or down.
- Next is the lateral adjustment: this usually achieves perfect alignment with adjacent doors or the cabinet frame.
- As a final fine-tuning step: the depth adjustment, meaning how far the door stands out on the frame / how tightly it closes.

It is important to take your time during these adjustments. A common mistake is tightening the screws fully too early. While the doors might look good at first, they can settle after a few days. It’s better to fully tighten them only at the end.

You achieve a clean alignment best by working systematically and initially only tightening all screws lightly. Also use a spirit level or ruler to check the gaps. Understanding the function of each adjustment screw on the hinges is crucial:

- Height adjustment (hinge arm)
- Side adjustment (mounting to the cabinet)
- Depth adjustment (relative to the cabinet)

Keeping these points in mind will quickly lead to excellent results. Some Ikea models have slightly more sensitive hinges, so it’s best to adjust carefully to avoid stripping screws.
