Hello everyone, I recently purchased the Ikea Brimnes chest of drawers set and am now wondering how to best protect the surface from scratches, stains, and general wear and tear. Although the surface seems sturdy, white-coated furniture often requires extra care since small damages can become very noticeable. I am mainly interested in whether there are specific protective treatments or maintenance methods that have proven effective for furniture with foil-coated MDF surfaces like the Brimnes series. What are your thoughts on using covers, protective films, or even waxes and oils in terms of the durability of this particular surface? I would appreciate well-informed tips, including product recommendations that have shown good results without causing any damage.

I would recommend avoiding wax or oil-based products, as the surfaces of Ikea household items are usually lacquered or laminated. It’s best to use soft cloths and mild cleaning agents. To prevent scratches, felt pads on furniture edges and coasters for glasses are helpful.

The surface protection of Ikea Brimnes furniture is a concern for many. The surface is actually a type of foil or melamine coating on MDF panels, which is relatively sensitive to scratches and moisture. I recommend the following approach:

- Regularly wipe with a damp, soft microfiber cloth to remove dust and dirt.
- Avoid using harsh cleaning agents or abrasive sponges that can damage the surface.
- For long-term protection, transparent PVC or TPU protective films are highly recommended. These can be custom-cut and applied with adhesive. This helps protect against scratches and minor spills.
- Make sure to always place heat sources, such as hot cups, on coasters, as the coating can be sensitive to heat.

In summary, the best protection is achieved through mechanical barriers (protective films, coasters) and careful cleaning.

I agree with that. However, when choosing a film, it is important to select high-quality materials to avoid adhesive residue. For similar surfaces, I use matte, scratch-resistant protective films that are easy to clean. Alternatively, you can opt for a glass plate cover, which fully protects the surface and is visually unobtrusive. Although this option is somewhat more expensive, it provides the maximum protection.

In short: No waxes or oils! It's best to use coasters and felt pads. Otherwise, only use a soft cloth with water and mild dish soap. Scratches can appear quickly otherwise.

Thanks for the tip. Are there cleaning products that have been proven safe? I’ve read about aggressive agents that can even damage “matte” films.

That sounds completely reasonable. I was thinking about trying wax-based furniture care, but I guess that doesn’t make sense if the surface is laminated.

I have overlooked that a few times; it seems important. Are there any other common mistakes to avoid when protecting the surface?
