Hello everyone, I’m looking for ideas and tips on how to use the Ikea Pax wardrobe as space-efficiently as possible in smaller apartments. Specifically, I want to know how to manage limited space to create as much storage as possible without making the room feel cluttered or restricting important movement areas. I’m familiar with the basic dimensions and options of the system but am unsure whether standard solutions are adequate or if it’s worth trying custom configurations with special inserts, modular components, or different layouts. I’m also interested in any practical examples or experiences, especially concerning interior arrangements that optimize storage while making it easier to keep things organized. How have you adapted your Pax systems to fit small rooms or apartments? Thanks in advance for your constructive suggestions!

I would recommend using the full height of the Pax unit, building it up to the ceiling. This way, the floor space remains free, and the wardrobes take up less floor area. Inside, you can use wardrobe organizer sets to ensure no space goes unused.

Hello barke, your question makes a lot of sense because the Pax is often underestimated in terms of its customization options. In smaller apartments, the following points are especially important:

- Make full use of the height: Most Pax wardrobes have adjustable shelves, which helps to organize the space more efficiently.

- Adjust the depth: The standard depths of 35 and 58 cm (14 and 23 inches) are the most common, but in very small rooms, a shallower depth might be worth considering to allow for more maneuvering space.

- Use modular interior fittings: Combine baskets, hanging rods, drawers, and shelves as needed. It can help, for example, to fix rods for short clothing and use drawers for accessories.

- Combine with other furniture: When space is limited, the Pax can also be “stacked” above other furniture or used as a room divider.

I would be interested to know the exact size of your floor area and whether other furniture pieces are nearby so that more precise suggestions can be made.

Thanks for the responses so far! My apartment is about 20 square meters (215 square feet), with the bedroom and living area combined. The Pax wardrobe is mainly meant to store my clothes and a few occasional household items. Although the room has a ceiling height of approximately 2.55 meters (8 feet 4 inches), I want to avoid making the space feel too cramped. At the moment, I have a small wardrobe that is 100 cm (40 inches) wide and about 200 cm (79 inches) tall, but I can hardly reach the upper shelves. Are there any smart solutions to access storage at the top while keeping it practical for everyday use? I am thinking about ladders or maybe special pull-out units—perhaps someone can share their experience with these kinds of solutions?

Regarding your situation: A 20 sqm (215 sq ft) room with combined living and sleeping use places specific demands on storage space. In general, when it comes to Pax:

- It makes sense to order wardrobes that reach up to the ceiling, preferably with doors extending to the ceiling and a reliable closing mechanism.
- The top shelves should be used mainly for storing items that are rarely needed.
- A small foldable or rolling step stool is a practical solution that can be stored compactly.

I also recommend using a mix of drawers, clothes rails at different heights, and baskets to organize various types of textiles. Particularly important is thoughtful interior organization; otherwise, the space won't be used efficiently.

If possible, bespoke shelves or third-party accessories can be requested or purchased to optimize the use of space even further. Are there fixed installation areas in the room (e.g., alcoves) that you could use for the Pax? An alcove solution often saves space.

Definitely! I’ve had really good experiences when you combine less accessible upper compartments with stylish sliding or folding doors that don’t add bulk. This keeps the space feeling open, and you can still reach the storage at the top when you need it. And hey, if you’re clever, you can even stack small boxes or vases up there – turning the wardrobe into a highlight rather than an eyesore 😉

Also: Using doors that match the color of the Pax can help it blend visually into the room, making it feel less bulky, especially in smaller spaces.
