Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to install several IKEA Metod base cabinets with adjustable shelves and would appreciate any tips and advice from experience on the best way to approach this setup. Specifically, I want to make sure that the shelves are installed correctly and securely, especially when adjusting the height multiple times.

I am interested in which tools and aids you would recommend, and exactly how the side panels with the series of holes are used to mount the shelves flexibly and safely. Are there any special tricks for placing the shelves precisely, particularly when the load varies due to kitchen utensils?

I have already read the IKEA instructions, but find them somewhat general and am looking for firsthand experiences that might give me a better understanding.

Thank you in advance!

Hello Sanbar,

Your question is very well posed, and I understand that the Ikea instructions can sometimes be a bit too simple. Basically, with Metod cabinets, an important point is the correct alignment of the side panels, as otherwise the shelf supports cannot be properly inserted.

The following approach has proven effective:
- Ensure that the side panels are perfectly vertical.
- The shelf frames (shelf supports) are inserted into the pre-drilled hole rows. Make sure they are fully and evenly seated.
- Adjustability is ensured because the hole spacing is standardized. You can therefore choose any desired height.
- A tip: Before inserting the shelves, briefly check with a spirit level that all support points are at the same height.

You basically only need a screwdriver, possibly a hammer for the dowels, and a spirit level as a tool.

If you have any further questions, feel free to ask!

Hello Sanbar,

I can only agree with Josan and would describe the process in even more detail because correct installation of Metod cabinets is really crucial for the stability and function of the adjustable shelves.

Here is my step-by-step suggestion focusing on the shelf supports:

- First, you should check all parts for completeness, especially the plastic sleeves for the drilled holes that will later hold the shelves.
- The rows of holes on the inner sides of the panels are standardized with a 32mm (1.26 inch) spacing, meaning each shelf can be adjusted flexibly in 3.2cm (1.26 inch) increments.
- The shelves rest on so-called shelf supports (or brackets) that hook into the two side panels. It is important that these supports sit evenly, otherwise the load will be concentrated at one end.
- You can gently tap the supports into place with a rubber mallet to help insert them; they should not become misaligned.
- Before placing the shelf boards, make sure the supports are securely seated and do not wobble.
- IKEA shelves are usually made of coated particleboard. When storing heavy items, try to distribute the load as evenly as possible and avoid overloading to ensure the shelves last longer.
- An external spirit level helps align the entire unit, especially if the floor is uneven.

May I ask: do you plan to install the Metod cabinets as freestanding units or as part of a kitchen run? This might lead to additional tips regarding stabilization.

Thank you for the very detailed response, fidasi.

I will mainly install the cabinets as part of a kitchen run, so directly against the wall and connected to the countertop. Are there any special considerations during assembly or regarding the shelves that I should keep in mind? Especially concerning stability and the possibility to adjust the shelves frequently.

The shelves should later create compartments of different heights, for example pots at the bottom and smaller items higher up, so flexibility is important to me.

Hello Sanbar,

I can add the following for assembling a kitchen cabinet run:

- Make sure the cabinets are properly aligned and leveled on the floor before joining them together.
- The shelves fit more securely when the side panels are tightly screwed and do not wobble.
- For wall mounting, the cabinets must be secured using the mounting brackets provided by Ikea. This installation also stabilizes the side panels against tipping, which is crucial for the shelf supports.
- If you use cabinets with deep drawers, avoid overloading the shelves, as the structure is affected by the openings.

Tip: Check all shelf supports again before installing the shelves, as even slight misalignments can cause the shelves not to sit correctly or to tilt easily.

I would like to add that the stability of the shelves and the entire structure largely depends on this wall mounting, as without it, the load distribution works differently.

It is also advisable to pay attention to the quality of the screws and wall plugs—as Ikea provides standard recommendations that sometimes need to be adjusted for different wall types. For example, drywall requires special hollow wall anchors; otherwise, you risk the cabinet loosening over time, which can cause the shelves to slip or break.

Also worth considering: have you thought about reinforcing the shelves with back panels? They increase stability and prevent the cabinet from twisting out of alignment.
