Are there any tips to make Ikea Brimnes doors easier to open?

I have the issue that the doors of my Brimnes wardrobe close very tightly and often open quite stiffly. This not only makes accessing the compartments more difficult but also causes increased wear on the doors and hinges over time. I am particularly interested in proven methods that are easy to implement to make opening smoother.

Maybe someone has experience with adjusting the hinges, lubricants, or other home remedies to make these doors glide more easily? Thanks for any helpful advice.

I know that all too well, especially after moving, the doors of my Brimnes were very stiff.

Simply adjusting the hinges slightly at the adjustment screws, meaning loosening them a little, often helps a lot. It’s best to proceed in millimeter increments (fractional inches), not too much at once, otherwise the doors may hang unevenly. Patience is key here.

Sometimes a little silicone spray on the hinges can also work wonders because it doesn’t leave sticky residues. It keeps the mechanism smooth without attracting dust.

Just gently adjust the hinges using the adjustment screws

That is generally true, but I think it’s also important to check whether the screws are properly positioned and not overtightened.

Additionally, I wonder if the issues might partly be related to the material itself or the construction. IKEA furniture is affordable, which often means less tolerance for flexibility. So, these tricks might only provide a temporary fix.

Does anyone here have experience with alternative hinge types that can be retrofitted on Brimnes furniture? Or perhaps replacing a wide-angle hinge with a soft-close hinge?

Loosen screws and lubricate hinges. Period.

If that doesn’t help, properly adjust the door so it doesn’t stick.

I would add the following: The hinges on the Brimnes wardrobe are simple inset hinges with a tension spring.

- It is best to slightly loosen the mounting screws on the door and the cabinet body and then align the door properly.
- Afterward, lubricate the moving parts with a drop of silicone oil, avoiding the use of grease as it attracts dust.
- Be careful not to create too much play, as this can cause the doors to malfunction.

This can make opening the doors much easier without compromising their function.

Additionally, small felt pads placed on the corners of the inside of the doors often help. They soften the contact and make opening easier.

Also: Cleaners applied to the seals or painted surfaces can reduce resistance as well.
