Hello everyone, I recently purchased an Ikea Metod kitchen unit and now face the challenge of fitting the cabinet doors precisely so they fit perfectly within the frame and open and close evenly. It is important to me not only to achieve a clean, visual line but also to ensure that the doors neither sag nor rattle. I have already tried adjusting the doors using the pre-installed adjustment options, but the result is not quite what I wanted. My question to the community is: What steps and tips should I follow when installing and adjusting the Ikea Metod cabinet doors to achieve a perfect fit and smooth operation? Are there any special techniques or troubleshooting methods that have proven effective, especially when dealing with small gaps, unevenness, or alignment issues? All advice and experiences are welcome!

Attach the door to the cabinet using the hinges, then carefully adjust the adjustment screws at the top, bottom, and side until the gaps are even. It is best to adjust the doors one after the other and check after each step to ensure everything sits flush. If the door does not close properly, frequently readjust the strike lip or damping.

As a supplement: Especially with Ikea Metod, it is helpful to first align the cabinet carcasses perfectly plumb. If the carcass is not completely straight and level, even perfectly adjusted doors can cause problems later on. I also recommend checking all the doors in the row repeatedly after installing each door leaf, as adjusting one door can sometimes cause slight shifts in the others. Sometimes, a narrow spacer on the side helps to ensure proper alignment.

Thanks in advance for the quick tips. I have a follow-up question: If the doors, despite precise adjustment, still have slightly different gaps to the cabinet, what could be the specific cause? Could this also be due to slightly warped doors or the wall or floor? And how would you ideally compensate for this in such a case? I want to work quite accurately to avoid any visually distracting differences.

This is a common issue with kitchen cabinets like Metod. Even if the doors are precisely adjusted at the hinge side, warping can occur if the surroundings are not perfectly level. Uneven floors or slightly skewed cabinet carcasses affect the gaps between the doors. Solution: The cabinet should be aligned perfectly using shims or furniture wedges, and if necessary, small gaps can be allowed by adjusting the hinge screws. A tolerance of about 1-2 mm (0.08-0.08 inches) between doors is normal and visually acceptable. If this is not possible, fine sandpaper can be used to adjust the door edges as a last resort.

I agree with this, but I would like to add that it’s worth double-checking the measurements of the doors before working on the carcass and hinges. My impression is that Ikea sometimes has production inconsistencies, especially with larger batches. This can cause uneven gaps. Has anyone else had experience sorting or swapping doors to achieve a more uniform alignment?
