Hello everyone,

I am currently considering getting furniture from the Ikea Hemnes series. It is especially important to me that the color options are easy to maintain. I have small children and very little time for extensive cleaning.

So my main question is: Are there any Ikea Hemnes color options that, due to their surface texture or color tone, are particularly suitable for households where quick and easy care is essential?

I have heard about the white option but fear it might show dirt easily. Are there any experiences or recommendations?

Thanks in advance for your opinions and advice!

White Hemnes pieces look nice but are unfortunately quite prone to stains.

Darker colors like brown or black are usually easier to maintain and better at hiding dirt.

Hello dulilis,

to answer your question as thoroughly as possible, we should take a closer look at the construction and surface treatment of the Hemnes series. Hemnes furniture is usually made of solid wood and treated with paint or wood stains.

- White paint: Although it looks modern, it tends to show dirt and small scratches more quickly.
- Natural wood tones and darker shades (such as dark brown): These finishes often use a more opaque stain or wood dye, which can appear more textured on the surface, helping to conceal minor wear and dirt better.

Another important aspect is maintenance:
- For painted furniture, a damp, lint-free cloth and mild soap are usually sufficient.
- Darker finishes are recommended if you want to avoid time-consuming polishing.

Do you have specific rooms or areas in mind? That could help provide more precise advice.

Good question, thanks! I am mainly planning Hemnes dressers and wardrobes for the bedrooms and hallway. The hallway tends to be a bit dustier and often gets dirt from outside. The bedroom should remain easy to maintain since I only want to quickly dust there.

A desk variant is also being considered, where coffee cups are often placed. A surface that doesn’t stain easily would be really helpful there.

I can understand your concerns well, dulilis. We also had the Hemnes in white, and it quickly became obvious how noticeable stains from even water or fingerprints were. Especially when children are involved, it can be really tiring.

A tip: The black or dark brown options not only look more elegant but are also more forgiving when something spills. Not a perfect solution, but definitely less annoying in everyday life.

For precise clarification:

- Hemnes in white has a satin finish, giving it a smooth but more delicate surface.
- The dark brown version is stained and sealed with a clear lacquer, making the surface somewhat more resistant to wear.
- Natural-colored variants resemble raw wood and may require more maintenance with specific wood oils.

Easy to maintain in terms of cleaning mainly means that the surface can be wiped with a damp cloth without damage. The darker versions have an advantage here, as stains are less visible.

Be cautious with white surfaces: they may yellow or discolor more quickly, especially in heavily used rooms.
