ᐅ My shelving unit has become greasy after being stored in the storage room for weeks – what can I do?

Sar_su49Hello everyone,
I have a question that I've been stuck on for a few weeks and hope someone with experience can help. My Kallax shelf was stored in my storage room, which unfortunately isn’t always well ventilated, and after a few weeks the shelf has become completely greasy – the surfaces feel kind of oily, sticky, and slightly dirty, which is really unpleasant, even though it was basically unused.
I suspect it’s due to the humidity and maybe also dust, but I don’t want to ruin the shelf with just any cleaning product or damage the surface.
Has anyone dealt with greasy surfaces on Kallax shelves? What exactly can I do to clean the shelf without damaging it, and how can I prevent this from happening again in the future?
Thanks in advance!

Hello Sar_su49,
I can understand your description well. A greasy film on Kallax shelves that were stored in a storage room is usually a combination of dust, moisture, and sometimes volatile components in the air that settle on the surface.
First, I would recommend cleaning the shelf thoroughly, not just with water, but in several steps:
1. Wipe dry with a microfiber or cotton cloth, preferably smooth, to remove loose dust.
2. Use a mild, grease-dissolving cleaner, such as dish soap diluted in about 1 liter (1 quart) of warm water with 1-2 drops of detergent. Dampen the cloth lightly, do not soak it.
3. After cleaning, be sure to wipe again with a clean, damp cloth to remove any residue.
4. Then wipe completely dry with a dry cloth to avoid water spots.
Kallax surfaces are coated, so you should avoid chemical cleaners containing solvents, as they can dull or alter the surface.
For prevention, I suggest monitoring the humidity levels in the storage room (ideal is 40-60%). A dehumidifier can help. Regular ventilation, at least briefly, also reduces moisture. You can minimize dust accumulation by covering or wiping the shelves regularly.
How is your storage room ventilated, and what is the approximate humidity there? This could help give more targeted advice.

Clean the shelf with lukewarm dish soap and water, then dry it.That sums it up pretty well 🙂 Sometimes the simplest tricks work best. I would add that a bit of patience also helps – if possible, leave the shelf outside in fresh air for a few hours after cleaning.
The greasy film feels really unpleasant, but it’s nothing you can’t get rid of. And if you approach it with a relaxed mindset, it’s almost a little DIY project in everyday life! Good luck!
It should be noted that sharp solvents such as acetone, alcohol, or vinegar-based cleaners must never be used for cleaning. These can damage the melamine surface of the Kallax shelving unit permanently.
A pH-neutral household cleaner or a mild soap solution is ideal. Additionally, the shelving unit should always be completely dried after cleaning to prevent moisture buildup, which can lead to greasy or even moldy surfaces.
Regular ventilation of the storage area not only prevents moisture damage but also reduces dust accumulation. In rare cases, off-gassing from stored materials can cause a greasy film on surfaces, but this is unusual for Kallax.

First, remove the coarse dirt as described. Then use a soft microfiber cloth slightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol (70%) diluted with water (about 1:3), which effectively dissolves grease without damaging the surface. Important: Test on an inconspicuous spot first!
After treating with alcohol, carefully wipe again with a damp cloth and allow to dry completely.
To prevent this, I recommend a combination of regular cleaning, using a dehumidifier, and if possible, not placing the shelf directly against exterior walls or in extremely damp storage areas.
Was your storage room unheated or prone to condensation?
