LihermesHello everyone,
I recently bought an Ikea Brimnes wardrobe and use it as a clothes cabinet. I noticed that the piece seems a bit unstable, especially when opening the doors frequently or when the cabinet is heavily loaded. Therefore, I’m wondering: how do professionals effectively stabilize their Ikea BRIMNES wardrobe to ensure it remains steady and doesn’t wobble or tip over? I’m interested in methods that directly reinforce or modify the structure of the cabinet itself, as well as tips for securing it to walls or additional measures commonly used by experienced furniture builders, craftsmen, and DIY enthusiasts. I would appreciate detailed and practical advice!

Hello Lihermes,
There are several proven methods to stabilize the BRIMNES cabinet: First of all, you should always use the supplied wall brackets and anchor them properly into the wall, ideally into a wooden stud or appropriate wall plugs. To reinforce the furniture itself, sturdy metal brackets can be added inside the side panels. Screwing the back panel to the cabinet frame can also improve stability. If the cabinet is heavily loaded, additional reinforcement of the shelves with brackets from below might be useful. Finally, it helps to level the cabinet feet as much as possible and use small shims underneath if the floor is uneven. I also recommend the option to secure the cabinet further with cam connectors and glue if you have some DIY experience.

As an addition: The BRIMNES wardrobe is not designed to withstand strong lateral loads. Therefore, the most important stability measure is proper wall anchoring. Ideally, this means securing it with suitable anchors into a solid wall or into wooden studs in drywall construction.
Additionally, retrofitting sturdy metal brackets on the inside or at the base can provide extra strength. There are also solutions using specialized furniture connectors to make the structure more rigid.
In general, it is advisable to avoid overloading individual shelves. If the wardrobe is placed on an uneven floor, shims should be used to minimize rocking.

The most important thing is wall mounting. The supplied brackets on the top back must definitely be installed.Thank you, that confirms that the original wall mounting is the foundation. However, I am also interested in how to proceed when direct wall mounting is not possible, for example in rental apartments with delicate walls. Are there professional alternatives to fixed screwing? For instance, floor attachments or internal reinforcements that keep the cabinet stable?
