Hello everyone,

I recently bought a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA and am about to start assembling it. I noticed that the instructions show each step clearly, but I’m unsure if there is a truly “optimal” order to follow during assembly to avoid mistakes or problems later on.

I’m curious how you approached this: Is there a specific sequence you would recommend? For example, assembling all the side panels first, then inserting the shelves, or the other way around? Also, how do you handle tightening the screws – do you fully tighten them right away or wait until the end to retighten?

I want to avoid the unit ending up crooked or damaging the wooden parts. Maybe there are some “secret” tips that aren’t included in the instructions – I’d appreciate any advice and experience you can share about the correct order and procedure for assembling the KALLAX.

Thanks in advance!

Hello jimli,

I completely understand your concerns—I faced the same challenge! It’s really not that easy when the instructions are good but only basic. My advice: take your time and first assemble all the parts “dry,” meaning without tightening all the screws fully right away. This way, you can still make adjustments if something doesn’t fit perfectly.

For my KALLAX, I assembled the outer frames first and only attached the back panel at the very end; this gives you more flexibility. Also, initially tighten the screws just enough by hand so the shelving unit can still be adjusted—only fully tighten everything at the very end.

This helped me keep track of everything and avoid stress. Especially if, like me, you don’t have professional tools, it makes the process much easier. If you’re ever unsure, just ask here—we’ll find a solution! 🙂

Hello jimli,

to thoroughly answer your question about the correct sequence and details when assembling the KALLAX, I would like to recommend a detailed procedure that I personally always follow:

First, it is advisable to lay out all the individual parts and compare them with the instructions – this helps avoid surprises.

Then, I first assemble the outer frame, meaning the two side panels along with the bottom and top panels, loosely screwed together. After that, the shelves are inserted – be sure to connect them properly with the dowels.

Next, I place the back panel only lightly, just enough to hold it in place, so that small adjustments to the angle can be made. I recommend screwing the back panel firmly only at the very end to align the structure optimally.

I completely agree.

Regarding the screws: I initially tighten them only by hand and only after the entire assembly do I tighten them again with a screwdriver. Moderate tightening is important to avoid damaging or pulling out the material.

If you have special screws that are particularly easy to overtighten, I recommend using a torque screwdriver attachment or at least being cautious.

If you want, I can also provide some tips on correctly inserting the dowels, which adds extra stability.

Hope this helps!

Hey jimli and all KALLAX fans here! It’s great to see you approaching your project so methodically :-)

I find that the fun of assembling increases a lot when you first make a little overview of how to plan the individual steps. For me, I started with the basic frame (that is, the side panels and the top/bottom panels), then inserted the shelves one by one, and finally attached the back panel. Very important: screw everything in only hand-tight at first, and only fully tighten at the end.

I totally agree! And if you notice something doesn’t fit quite right, it’s better to loosen it and realign – that will save you trouble later on.

Another thing I learned: if you want to assemble several Kallax units, it helps to prepare your assembly surface beforehand – for example, a blanket or a large cloth – to prevent any scratches.

Building can actually be fun and works great with the right planning. You’ve got this! 🙂

Good morning,

I would like to contribute to the discussion by adding some precise facts that are often overlooked during the assembly of KALLAX shelving units.

First: The recommended assembly sequence is as follows: connect the two side panels to the bottom panel first, then position the shelves, and finally secure the top panel. The back panel is installed last and fixed with small nails.

This order ensures that the frame has the necessary stability while the key connections are made.

Second: When tightening the screws, it is common practice to first tighten all components by hand only. Afterwards, proceed with a controlled final tightening using a screwdriver to avoid damaging the parts and to ensure stability.

Finally, a tip for preparation: Before starting assembly, I recommend checking that all connecting parts (dowels, screws, nails) are complete. This prevents unpleasant surprises.

If needed, I can also provide an assembly checklist.

Hello jimli and everyone interested,

I’m glad you’re asking such a detailed question here, because especially with the KALLAX, having an organized approach really helps to make the assembly process stress-free.

Regarding the order: I always start the way andre3 described, as this gives the frame a stable base early on.

What I would additionally recommend is to slide the shelves in initially without securing them immediately. This way, you can test the unit and make small adjustments to the angles. This is especially useful if the floor or walls in your home are uneven, as it allows some flexibility.

This advice is invaluable! Often, impatience leads people to tighten everything right away – but with a bit of patience, bigger problems can be avoided.

In the end, I fully and evenly tighten all screws so that the pressure is distributed and the wood is not damaged.

For anyone looking for tips on handling the back panel: make sure to drive the nails or staples only as deep as needed to avoid warping the panel. Sometimes I use a thin wooden block between the hammer and the back panel when tapping, which helps prevent dents.

Good luck with your assembly! Feel free to ask if you have any questions.
