Hello everyone,

I recently purchased some Malm furniture from Ikea and have noticed that the finish is increasingly peeling off in certain areas, especially on heavily used edges and surfaces. I understand that the material and surface treatment of Malm pieces can be somewhat delicate.

I am particularly interested in proven methods or tips to prevent finish peeling on Malm furniture in the long term. I mean both preventative measures and care tips that protect the surfaces without causing damage. Are there any special sealants, cleaning products, or handling techniques that have proven to be effective?

I would appreciate your knowledgeable recommendations or experiences with similar issues. Thanks in advance!

Hello babette,

Your issue is actually quite common with furniture that has laminated surfaces like Malm. The paint or finish usually starts to peel due to mechanical stress, moisture, or the use of incorrect cleaning products.

The most important points to keep in mind are:

- Use mild, pH-neutral cleaning agents and avoid abrasive or solvent-based substances.
- Clean with soft cloths, not rough sponges.
- Protect heavily used edges with furniture pads or edge guards.
- Avoid direct sunlight exposure, as UV rays can make the laminate brittle.

Additionally, there are special wax-based furniture sealants that create a protective but non-sticky layer. This makes the surface more resistant to scratches and wear. However, always test the sealant first to ensure it doesn’t cause any discoloration.

I hope this helps you for now! 🙂

In my experience, besides proper maintenance, the surrounding environment is also crucial: Excessive humidity can weaken the adhesive bond of the membrane, while extreme dryness can make the material brittle.

A consistent indoor climate and avoiding direct contact with water or steam are therefore advisable.

Additionally, it is worth considering whether certain parts exposed to particularly high stress can be fitted with protective felt or rubber pads to prevent abrasion.

Thank you, Ethan, for your detailed post. I am curious if you have specific product recommendations for these mild cleaning agents, or if simple soapy water is sufficient?

That advice about humidity is helpful. My living room can get a bit more humid in the summer, so I will pay closer attention to that.

Do you also have tips on how to protect furniture from mechanical wear during use without affecting its appearance? Perhaps there are discreet protective films or similar solutions?

It is interesting to see how care and environmental factors have been considered here so far. However, we should not overlook the basic nature of Malm furniture: it consists of veneered or laminated particleboard, whose surface is naturally less resistant to abrasion and moisture than solid wood.

Applying additional sealants to an already laminated or veneered surface can potentially affect the adhesion of the existing layer. So caution is advised—not to worsen the problem through improper treatment. Unfortunately, there are no reliable statements on this, as Ikea does not provide recommendations for post-application sealants.

My advice: focus on mechanical protective measures, such as edge guards, felt pads, or coverings, to prevent direct abrasion.

Additionally: When it comes to preventing paint peeling on Malm furniture, a comprehensive approach is advisable.

1. Cleaning: As already mentioned, avoid harsh cleaning agents. A simple, slightly damp microfiber cloth is entirely sufficient.
2. Drying: After cleaning, be sure to wipe again with a dry cloth to prevent moisture residues.
3. Protection: For the edges, transparent, self-adhesive edge protectors that are barely noticeable and available at furniture stores are recommended.
4. Usage: Do not place heavy objects permanently on sharp-edged surfaces; instead, use mats or felt pads.

Studies on film adhesion show that it is mechanically weakened by abrasion and moisture, so these measures are indeed effective. Applying a sealant afterward should be done with caution.
