ᐅ What to do if the doors of BILLY shelving units no longer close properly?

Hello everyone,

I have the following problem with my Billy shelf unit: the doors no longer close properly. They stick or remain slightly open, which can be quite annoying for a shelf with doors. The doors don’t appear to be warped, as far as I can see, and the hinges seem to be fine as well. However, it looks like the alignment might have shifted somehow.

Has anyone had experience with this and can offer advice on how to adjust or fix the doors correctly without having to buy new hinges? What other possible causes are there if the doors on a Billy shelf unit no longer close properly?

I look forward to your tips and suggestions!

If there are still issues after adjustment, check the door hinges for any damage. Additionally, a small drop of oil on the hinges can help if they squeak or stick.

Next time, you can do a quick self-test on the doors by gently pressing from the front with your hand to see how the door responds under pressure—whether it warps or sticks. 🙂

Sometimes the shelf just ‘moves’ a bit, especially with temperature changes or humidity. In that case, the only real solution is a perfect adjustment or alternatively attaching a thicker rubber spacer to the shelf.

Good luck with your screwing around! 😉

Sometimes the shelf just has a bit of "life" to it

Interesting theory, but I believe the issue is more often due to a rigid construction rather than the "liveliness" of the shelf. With the BILLY, the hinges are actually designed to compensate for this. If the doors don’t close properly, it is usually the result of installation errors or material fatigue.

My advice: better to look for a technical cause instead of attributing it to natural warping. Otherwise, every piece of furniture turns into a DIY project.
