Hello everyone,

I have an IKEA KALLAX shelf unit in my living room that I use as a bookshelf, but I keep running into the same issue: the shelf depth of about 39 cm (15 inches) is often too shallow, especially when I want to place larger or multiple books side by side. Because of this, some books stick out, or I can’t use the shelf optimally.

My question is: What options are there to increase the depth of a KALLAX shelf unit without having to buy entirely new furniture? Are there practical DIY ideas, add-on components, or other solutions to create more depth and make the shelf more suitable for books?

I would appreciate tips and experiences specifically related to the KALLAX unit – thanks!

Hello Glaturan36,

First of all, good question! The issue with the depth of the KALLAX units is actually well known. Basically, there are two options: either you add an extension at the back or front of the shelf, or you use special insert boxes / shelf inserts that provide you with more storage space.

A fairly simple solution is to screw wooden panels (e.g., plywood) with angle brackets to the back of the KALLAX. This way, you can increase the depth by about 10-20 cm (4-8 inches). It’s sturdy and relatively cost-effective.

Alternatively, you can use so-called bookends or wider attachments at the front, but that is more of an aesthetic solution than a real depth extension.

If you are handy, you could even increase the overall shelf depth by gluing additional frames. There are also some good tutorials on YouTube about this.

If you like, I can send you a few detailed tips.

Hi,

I simply glued plain wooden panels to the back and fastened them with brackets. It costs little and also provides stability. Problem solved.

Sure, this "simple" wooden panel extension is a classic. But honestly, it makes the entire shelf look like a bulky box that is pushed to its limits. My suggestion: why not go for a shelf unit that has the proper depth from the start?

KALLAX is definitely very stylish, but it’s not really designed for books. The shelf design should adapt to the books, not the other way around.

Also, it annoys me that such "extensions" often compromise stability. I see this more as a half-hearted compromise rather than a long-term solution.

Stability and appearance can be improved with a glass panel mounted at the front, or with a deep wooden frame, which can be custom-made by a carpenter.

If the suspension of the additional panels is carefully adjusted and reinforced, this works well.

My recommendation: Try using attractive wooden crates or boxes as 'inserts' in individual compartments.

Not only does this look charming, but it also creates extra storage space without overcrowding the entire shelving unit.

And hey, a bit of DIY with paint or handles makes the whole thing even more personalized – turning the KALLAX into a book upgrade with character. 🙂
