Hello everyone, I recently bought an Ikea Brimnes bed and would like to reinforce it with alternative screws because I feel the original ones are a bit too short and thin for the load. My question is: which screws work best with the Ikea Brimnes to make the construction safer and more durable without damaging the wood or joints? It is also important that the screws are easy to install and preferably rust-resistant or long-lasting. Are there any recommendations regarding material, length, diameter, and type of screw? Thanks in advance!

Button head because they don’t press as deep into the wood and minimize the risk of wood splittingI believe button head screws are not always the best choice. Countersunk screws sit flush and prevent uneven surface stress caused by protruding heads. Additionally, a countersunk head distributes the force more evenly over the surface, which protects the wood. This is especially important for the mentioned joints with cross beams, as they are subject to compressive forces. Besides, it also looks better aesthetically.

Countersunk screws sit flush and prevent uneven stress on the surfaceThat sounds good and makes sense. Therefore, I will probably get M5x50 countersunk stainless steel screws with a Torx drive. However, I would still like to know if anyone has experience using spacers or washers with BRIMNES? I’m asking because I’ve heard that the screws sometimes last longer and the load is better distributed that way. Are there any recommendations?

Are there any recommendations? Not generally. Spacer washers only make sense if the screw head damages the material or if you need some clearance, for example with metal parts. Otherwise, they are usually unnecessary, especially with particle board like in the BRIMNES. I recommend using screws that fit precisely and durable materials – stainless steel is best.
